We arrived to be taken on a sightseeing tour of the rare breed of cattle they have there but, unfortunately, there was no-one about. The rough terrain to the carpark was really dreadful and the car suffered with all the stones and bumps. When we parked up we were the only vehicle in the carpark and no sign of any staff. We followed the confusing signs through the gate into the field and walked down the steep hill (no good for the disabled!) ignoring the sheep with their lambs that were watching us. Got to the 'Hammel' where staff should have been for us to pay and take us on the tour but there was no-one around. After waiting for 20 minutes we headed back to our vehicle to attempt the dangerous descent back down the hill. Very disappointing and really bad staffing.

I've read the other reviews and can understand some of the comments, however, we had a wonderful time. I think you need to note...THIS IS A MEDIVAL CASTLE! It is NOT a luxury castle stay! Once you get that...the rest is wonderful! Joyce was a delight to work with and made our reservation process very smooth. Our room was clean and EXACTLY what we wanted & expected...rustic & full of character. The Ghost Tour that evening...ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! Graham Burney & wife, Jill made it truly chilling!!! My niece and I barely slept all night after hearing & experiencing the stories & things there. In the Edward Room we saw a dark shadow cross in front of the window! It was unbelievable...this room is on the third floor so it was NOT someone outside!!! Thanks to all who made our stay a truly memorable one!! Would definitely recommend this for those seeking a medival experience with a chilling twist!

Though cluttered, and a tad on the over priced mark, it was fascinating to wander around and take it all in! You must visit the tearoom!

Lots to see, although very cluttered, would be good if there was more info telling you about the rooms and the owners!! The minstrels tea rooms is very cosy :-)

For £9 for each adult it was quite simply a rip off. Instead of being able the to delve into the castles history you get the chance look around rooms of possessions of an 'eccentric' old man. If this was £2 then it might have been good value. WARNING if you are asthmatic do not visit, the need to employ a cleaner is paramount. On the plus side the receptionist was nice and gave lots of interesting info about the castle (eg. earl gray family connection).
