“Great hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2010

Really great hotel, excellent location right in the centre of the town. Looks charming from outside and this continues inside. We had room 104 on the second floor on the street side of the hotel. Nice big room with a very tidy bathroom, nice big towels and clean bed linen.
I thought the street may be noisy on a Friday night however there was no problem and we both slept through to breakfast. Speaking of which, it was very nice too! Buffet laid on so you could help yourself to a cooked breakfast or cereal, yoghurt etc.
There was a wedding party (very popular in this hotel apparently) on the evening so the hotel was busy but, again, no problem with noise.
Parking is limited with a small car-park behind the hotel but we managed to squeeze in OK.

Arrived in Alnwick in the early afternoon- advised by fellow traveller to duck in and see the White Swan hotel due to it's history connected to the White Star Lines. Had a look around at stunning dinning room, staircase and reloving front door all from the Olympic (sister ship to Titanic). Asked at reception about their tariff for that evening Tuesday to our shock 99GBP which included wait for it- entry for two people into Alnwick Castle Gardens which would have cost 20GBP 3 course dinner that evening approx 50GBP a bottle of sparkling wine? and full breakfast the next morning approx 20GBP you do the sums- great value . Was it a mid week special/winter/standby who knows. Oh yes forget to mention upgrade to suite. We will be back, Oh yes the service in the restaurant was a little slow but wait arn't we on holidays! kick back and enjoy the evening for what it is. Nice food, good wine and great company. Maybe the reception toilets were a little dirty because the group of bus people didn't put their rubbish in the bin provided!!!

The location was probably the best thing about this hotel. Reception staff friendly. We stayed in room 108, and the fire exit goes through this room, there is a lock bypass on the room door, so I suppose anyone could enter this room. The room was stuffy, no window to open, but you could leave the fire escape door open, but unsafe, as anyone could then come in from outside. Bed too soft. Room size adequate. Dining room is different, having the wood panneling from the sister ship to the Titanic. Buffet breakfast was uninspiring, and what should have been hot was left sitting under heat lamps, but was still lukewarm, even the freshly made scrambled egg from the kitchen came out cold. Woth £140/night - I don't think so.

A nice hotel, but the service was terrible at first. We were part of a coach party. On the first night, it took ages to complete our meal - long waits between courses. The same on the second night. Miserable staff didn't help. On the third day, the trip organisers asked to see the manager. After their chat, things improved somewhat.

Entertainment was supposed to be included, but was really not much - a couple of quizzes and the odd game of bingo.

This is a shame, because the hotel has great potential.

We stayed only for one night as part of a large party that were staying in the hotel but eating elsewhere. The manager kindly let us check in early but made the point of saying that by doing this it would increase his housekeeping expenses. This could be a true fact but it's not good customer relations to state it to a guest. He then went on to complain that as we were all eating out he would not be making any money on food & drink that evening. Considering there was a block booking in the region of 20 rooms these comments were not very tactful.
Having read previous reviews about noisy rooms on the front street or over the kitchen ventilation system ( one of our party requested to be re-roomed away from the kitchen) we were pleased to have a small room well away from any noise. Apart that is from a gent in the neighbouring room whose snoring was evident all night. Not his fault - the walls are very thin!
The cooked breakfast was poor, being placed under heating lights and not cooked to order. For a room costing £130/night ( full rack-rate even though a large booking) I would have expected better.

A first class welcome, particularly by a Trainee member of staff (who wore a badge to identify she was a trainee). Bedroom wasn't to our satisfaction, as it was small, overlooked the car park and was just above the extractor fan for the kitchen. We decided to upgrade to a suite, which wasn't exactle a suite, but a large bedroom with settee and easy chairs. This room overlooked the mian street, it was light and sunny, albeit there was some traffic noise.

The staff couldn't have been more helpful, and they went out of their way to make sure we had a pleasant stay.

The hotel is in easy walking distance from Alnwick Castle and Alnwick Garden, both of whish are worth a visit.

Breakfast was adequate, but some of the food was dry, after being under the lights which kept it warm.
