“Nice rooms, but dont have your wedding there!”
Reviewed June 8, 2009

We stayed at the White Swan for two nights whilst attending a wedding held in the hotel. The rooms were nice and reception staff were helpful and polite. However, these are the only good points we found.

The main course of our wedding breakfast was tiny and we were provided with two half full bowls of potatoes and two of veggies between 11 people. The staff were rude and we were asked to leave later in the afternoon so that they could set up for dinner. On requesting another place to sit, we were told to use the 'lounge' which was in fact some chairs set in the reception area.

At the evening event, in the beautiful function, room bar service was poor and the buffet was appalling - frozen pizza with left over from breakfast sausages on top!

The staff began bringing through tables and chairs to set up for morning breakfast just after ten, and we were hurried out when the bar shut at 11.10. The night porter was rude and unhelpful and we were very unimpressed at the standard of service throughout.

Wont be back, for the price we paid we expected to be treated with a little courtesy

Very friendly staff; our two 7 year olds were given the run of the place, looked after by all the staff but in particular by Paul, the manager. Comfortable, clean room large enough for family of four, second 'z-bed' changed to more comportable one on request after first night. Large bathroom, (incl. four large and four small towels - we've often had to ask for the full quota in other hotels), decent standard breakfast. Wooden and lights decor in main dining room from the Olympic, the sister ship to Titanic makes for quite an evocative sight. Some of the criticisms in other reviews of Hardy's bistro, the less formal restaurant room/bar attached, are true - we had a dinner there with 10 of us and there some peculiar things missing from some dishes, but overall our experience was not half as bad as some suggested it might be. Coffe esp. good. The food at Blakemoore's down the road was better, mind you, but the bedrooms here were superior to Blakemoore's where other members of our family were staying; the competition between the two hotels is probably a good thing. Free wi-fi excellent, TV should be better (only has 4 terrestial channels), didn't like the noise of neighbours slamming their doors shut in the corridor, quiet lounge area, lovely weeping willow outside dining room, castle a few minutes walk away, car park full but they allow you to park where you shouldn't if necessary. Would stay there again, for sure.

We really enjoyed our stay at the White Swan. We've stayed in some lovely places and this compared well. The room (the 'Warkworth Suite') was spacious, luxuriously furnished and absolutely gorgeous - I was happy we had paid the little bit extra because even though it was small for a 'suite' it was really an excellent room. Maybe the best bit though was the exceptional art nouveau dining room. Dinner itself was solidly British like having Sunday lunch at your Gran's - hearty rather than fine-dining. Good breakfast - particularly liked the sausages. Staff were pleasant rather than welcoming - service sometimes seemed a bit offhand and not the most organised. All in all, we were delighted with what we got for the price (£150 for two people, dinner bed and breakfast) and I would recommend it highly.

We stayed for two nights in the hotel. Breakfast was fine but the dinner in Hardy's was atrocious!!We complained and were met with indifference and rudeness to the point of our leaving the dining room in disgust. The soups were not as described (where WERE the coriander and bacon croutons??) - the mussels were kiddY size portion of what looked like microwaved shrivelled crusteaceans, in a tasteless white residue - little wonder the dining room was empty!!I do not think there was a chef to complain to. We were not appeased or offered recompense, and were not billed for this so called Meal!!!Had we been we certainly would have refused to pay. This hotel is let down badly by this disgraceful excuse for a restaurant, and whilst it is a lovely hotel, would not recommend the restaurant to anyone.

My husband and I ate at Hardy's Bistro this Tuesday 14th (after Easter weekend) and had an incredibly disappointing experience.
Our dining experience started badly when we received our glasses of red wine, mine with 3 fruit flies and both glasses undrinkable. I hastily returned these to the bar and requested another 2 glasses of red which our waitress delivered to our table in the dirtiest wine glasses ever! Admittedly the wine itself was good but the whole thing did not bode well!
My chick pea stew was the worst example of a stew I've ever seen , my husband's steak panini was tiny and served with the most appallingly old stale salad that he refused to eat.
What a shame that the the chef / manager cares so little about the because they have a fabulous location in the centre of Alnwick and have clearly spent a lot of money on furnishings the place.

A member of the Classic Lodges group, we booked this stay with Tesco's Clubcard Vouchers. It worked out at £82 per room per night and we payed the difference. The rooms were simple but the bathrooms were newly upgraded and clean with free toiletries (gel/shampoo etc).

The breakfast is served in the Olympic Suite - built to fit the wooden panelling from the sister ship of the Titanic. Very classy! The breakfast itself was OK, cereal, fruit and full English (but no beans, or hash browns which would have helped the veggies, and very few fried eggs - people had to keep asking for more).

The bed for our daughter, 9 years old (added to the room) was not ideal as it was just a Z-bed style and rather basic, however we didn't end up paying a supplement for an extra child or her breakfast.

TV reception was atrocious, with only 4 basic channels available which made it difficult for the kids (14, 13 & 9) who didn't particularly want to read and hadn't brought a playstation!

Parking is limited but we had no problem getting a spot and the local parking is about £2 for 24 hrs, only across the yard from the back of the hotel.

Easy walking distance to Alnwick Castle & Gardens, the centre is 200 yds and there are lots of local shops including those to pick up lunch or eat out for dinner.

On balance a great location but just a glorified Holiday Inn. Only worth it because of the Tesco Deal!
