The White Swan Hotel
Ranked #5 of 5 Hotels in Alnwick
Reviewed May 24, 2013

Stayed at the White Swan for one night while staying in Alnwick with friends. Room was comfortable with spacious bathroom - bed was very comfortable and lovely big towels in the bathroom. I booked the hotel through Booking.Com and pre-paid. On checking out I was presented with a bill for the full cost. However, the staff were very helpful in sorting it out. Only downside was poor service at breakfast. I had to get up from the table to find someone to order tea and our cooked breakfast took 45 minutes to appear - we were told they had 'lost the order'. Apart from that a pleasant stay and the Olympic Dining Room where we had breakfast was amazing - decorated with wood panelling from the Olympic, sister ship to the Titanic.

Dear Reviewer, Many Thanks for your recent review and feedback. Whilst I am delighted that on the whole you enjoyed your stay with us I am disappointed that our breakfast service was not up to standard. In the interests of honesty and integrity, we did experience challenges on our breakfast service in the particular week you stayed at the hotel. This has been addressed and we are returning our breakfast service to its usual high standard.
Once again Many Thanks

Regards

Just had afternoon tea at this hotel and it was very poor.
We were shown to the dining area after reception where the tables all had empty wine bottle with a candle in them which is ok for night time but only in the way on the small tables set for lunch.
There was one other couple at another table and they were served with their afternoon tea after we sat down and it all looked nice on the tiered cake stand.
We ordered tea with ours as another couple sat near us ordering their afternoon tea also.
The waitress arrived with our two trays of mixed sandwiches and assorted scones cake etc.
No tiered cake stand for us & the waitress realising there was no room for two trays on the table so leaving the sandwiches saying she would bring the cakes later.
There were four rounds cut into quarters which were;
Smoked salmon (lovely)
Ham (lovely)
Egg (tasteless)
Cheese mixed with pickle (awful)
Served with a tasty salad on the tray in a line between the sandwiches.
The couple next to us were served the same way so the Hotel only had 1 tiered stand then.
Because there was no additional hot water on the table we ran out of tea which is not good enough due to non attentive staff.
With the sandwiches finished & the tea replenished our second tray arrived with;
2 dry scones a ramekin dish with jam & butter but no cream
2 shoux pastry swans with cream in the centre 2 halves of a strawberry & 4 raspberries (nice)
1 piece of jam cake (nice)
1 piece of carrot cake (nice)

Overall it was not worth £25 with the very first thing the table being too small, with no table cloth , no tiered stand , ran out of tea , no choice of sandwiches before ordering & pickle not served in a separate ramekin dish .

Had an evening meal in Harvey's Bistro, the food and service were good and as expected. Quite full at the time so booking a table might be advisable in the evenings. The only gripe I have is that the wine seemed a bit pricey, other than that all was fine.

Dear Reviewer, Many Thanks for your review and I am delighted that you enjoyed your evening meal with us in Hardy's Bistro at the white Swan Hotel. Following a re launch of the Bistro it is becoming advisable to book a table particularly on a Friday or Saturday night. However, we have lounges to sit and enjoy a drink if we do not have a table straight away.

Once again, many thanks for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future.

Kind Regards

I stayed for 2 nights with 2 older children. Our room was lovely, spacious, comfy beds and everything we needed. Lovely welcome from reception staff. Nice atmosphere in hotel, lovely public areas. If I was being picky (and this is just a personal view) the bed bases did not have valances covering them and I thought this spoiled the look of an otherwise lovely room. It was also personal opinion that I did not think the breakfast was as good as the rest of the hotel but it was ok. The white swan is what I would describe as a proper hotel, it has history and is a pleasure to stay in.

Dear Reviewer, many thanks for your great feedback following your meal in Hardy's Bistro. The kitchen and front of house team have worked hard over the past months to re launch the bistro and we are really proud of what has been achieved. It is great to read of such feedback as it demonstrates that we are going in the right direction.

group of 4 staying one night with meal in the Olympic dining room. Staff very friendly and efficient with nothing too much trouble , including changing rooms so we could be closer. Meals were very good and the waiter on our night was a gem who we all hope the management recognise as he went above and beyond in his service.
Centrally located and very clean the only minor drawbacks being the smallish car park (the public carpark is just behind the hotels car park and is cheap £2 for the whole day) and there being no lift if you required one.

Room Tip: Rooms in the old section facing the main street are larger than the ones in the new "wing"...

We booked a two night dinner bed and breakfast stay for 2 nights, May 4th 2013. We were very pleased with all apsects of the hotel. The staff were very friendly and polite. Some of the best experienced in any hotel. The dinner was first class. Could not fault it. Service at breakfast was a little slow, but overall, I would give the hotel 10 out of 10.

Room Tip: Rooms in the annex (1 to 6) are quiet. Highly recommended.
