“A fantastic stay!”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

We had a great stay at this fantastic Youth Hostel. Spotlessly clean, great facilities, the beds were the comfiest I have ever slept in in a hostel (and wider than average), immaculate ensuite bathroom, large well equipped kitchen and lounges. Staff were really friendly and helpful.
There is lots to do in the area - as well as beaches don't miss Barter Books or the Tree House Cafe at Alnwick Gardens.
THANK YOU Alnwick Youth Hostel for a great stay!!!

Stayed here on a recent cycle trip. Was very welcoming and friendly when we arrived cold and very tired. Secure bike storage was a plus. Big comfy bunks, spacious + spotless rooms, really good food facilities - self catering kitchen and a top full english continental for a fiver. Hostel staff very helpful and friendly. My only tiny negative would be that there are no communal showers only one shower per bedroom (shared between 6 people) but I guess this would suit some people better. Just means if you are desperate to wash off a days mud and sweat you may have to be a bit patient! Would definitely recommend and stay again!

Room Tip: If you are fussy about noise maybe get a room away from the front street - church bells go off every...

Thanks for your review - we always try to offer the best service we can so are delighted you had an enjoyable stay.

When the hostel was designed, the intention was to provide ensuite rooms - so we have a ratio of 1 shower to 4 guests - a ratio above and beyond Visit England guidelines for youth hostels - but in our dorm rooms this is a ratio of 1 to 6. Unfortunately there will always be the odd occasion when guests may have to wait for a shower. When the opportunity for refurbishment comes, we will look at the possibility of providing an additional shower, if we can reconfigure the building.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Alnwick Youth Hostel in the future.

Best wishes

We stayed at the hostel on 1 June and the hostel is well set up in a building with great character. The beds were comfortable and bathroom very good, along with the dining area. Unfortunately, we seemed to have run into the same school group as the previous review and I have to say there were noises until at least 11.30pm. Although this might be expected with groups in the hostel it would be good if the groups could be separated as best as possible to be away from other guests rooms...I understand this may not be possible for practical arrangements with rooms numbers but the group did seem to be spread out throughout the hostel. Other than that I would not hesitate staying here again and seeing more of Northumberland.

Thank you for your review.

Its always good to hear feed back from guests who have stayed.

You mentioned noise from a School Group - during the time frame of your stay no School groups were present, so I suspect the noise you heard was from another source. As mentioned in response to earlier reviews, noise will always be a factor when staying in a youth hostel. By its very nature, one should expect young people to be staying in hostel accommodation. Our ethos actively encourages young people to stay - in a location which otherwise they may never have visited before or been unable to afford to spend the night in, away from home, discovering new experiences, learning new skills and forming new friendships.

Sadly, some times, despite our best attempts to allocate rooms to groups in a block, operational reasons prevent us from doing this as effectively as we would like. Our group leaders are always briefed to ensure their groups are quiet after 22.00hrs, and our staff make regular security checks round the building In future, if you feel that the noise level is too loud, too late at night, please remember the duty member of staff can be alerted and will be happy to take action - after all its easier to fix at the time, than to wait until the following morning or an online review.

Despite the disturbance you experienced, I am pleased to hear you enjoyed all other elements of your stay. Our team love hearing from users of the hostel - so I will pass on your comments.

I look forward to welcoming you back to Alnwick Youth Hostel in the future.

Best wishes

Clean rooms, comfortable beds, en-suite room, good self catering facilities and attractive dining area. Helpful staff. Not a great night's sleep thanks to a large group of teenage children - but I guess you expect that in a youth hostel!

Thanks for the review.

Sadly we can't always prevent users of the hostel from making excesive noise, but hopefully after 22:00hrs the hostel was fairly peaceful. Noise does travel further at night when you are trying to sleep. Some seasoned hostel users bring a pair of ear plugs just in case.

We have a duty staff member present in the hostel - so if it gets too noisy, please let us know and we can take action for you.

I hope we can accommodate you again in the future.

Best wishes

We stayed at this hostel for a couple of nights at the end of Feb 2013 and had a very warm welcome from the staff and a lovely stay. The facilities in the well converted old police station are excellent, the bedroom and ensuite was clean without being fussy, all communal areas well equipped (with games room including table football table and a piano), and the breakfasts were delicious and filling.

The location of the hostel is great too, being only a couple of minutes walk from the market place, near a couple of good real ale pubs, in walking distance of the famous Barter Books and Alnwick Castle and gardens, and not far from lovely coastal walks, Howick Hall arboretum and plenty of other places to while away some time. The hostel staff also suggested we do the fascinating Alnwick Town trail, calling in at the lovely Bari Tea on route.

Getting there is easy, with bus stops for the main Newcastle to Berwick buses right outside the hostel, and although there is no hostel car park there are plenty of options nearby, with some free parking to be had if you work around the usual daytime restrictions near a busy shopping centre.

The only down side is that there is only one double room so if you want it you may have to book early! I'm sure we'll be going back

Thank you for your review - its always good to get feedback from guests and to know that the ideas we suggest for activities and places to visit are well received.

Alnwick Castle has reopened for the summer again and has lots of exciting events and attractions on. Another fav of ours is the trip out to the Farne Islands by boat. The puffins are returning to the islands to nest now so its well worth the trip out to see them.

We look forward to welcoming you to Alnwick Youth Hostel again in the future.

Stayed over a weekend with family and was pleasantly surprised by the standard of the accommodation here. All the usual features of a Youth Hostel (albeit outside the normal YHA network) and very clean, tidy and organised. Bedrooms very comfortable and some with en-suite too, plus family rooms seem to be near kitchen and lounge which is really helpful.

The SC kitchen is great and has everything you need with a nice big breakfast room to enjoy a pre-ordered breakfast if desired.

Other reviews mentioned bus noise but this is not really an issue.

All local attractions are easy to access from here (e.g., Holy Island, Bamburgh, Alnwick Gardens).

As with all YH and YHA the prices seem to be creeping up since we first joined and tend to be inline (or sometimes higher) than other small hotels. I think YH/YHA is a personal preference rather than a cost-saver (esp where family rooms are concerned).

Room Tip: Near kitchens and lounge

Thank you for your review - glad to hear you had a great stay.

You will find all our rooms, even the dorm rooms, are ensuite - no long walks down drafty corridors in your towel here!

As an independent hostel within the YHA network, we need to raise sufficient revenue to cover our operating costs and allow us to reinvest in the building. Sadly, as a standalone business, we don't have the network to spread our risk, as YHA does. But we hope that the higher standard of facilities and attention to cleanliness helps set us appart from the rest. Locally we still offer the best value accommodation in town! Find us on Facebook for some great money off offers.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Alnwick YH in the future.

Best wishes
