We stayed at this hostel for a couple of nights at the end of Feb 2013 and had a very warm welcome from the staff and a lovely stay. The facilities in the well converted old police station are excellent, the bedroom and ensuite was clean without being fussy, all communal areas well equipped (with games room including table football table and a piano), and the breakfasts were delicious and filling.

The location of the hostel is great too, being only a couple of minutes walk from the market place, near a couple of good real ale pubs, in walking distance of the famous Barter Books and Alnwick Castle and gardens, and not far from lovely coastal walks, Howick Hall arboretum and plenty of other places to while away some time. The hostel staff also suggested we do the fascinating Alnwick Town trail, calling in at the lovely Bari Tea on route.

Getting there is easy, with bus stops for the main Newcastle to Berwick buses right outside the hostel, and although there is no hostel car park there are plenty of options nearby, with some free parking to be had if you work around the usual daytime restrictions near a busy shopping centre.

The only down side is that there is only one double room so if you want it you may have to book early! I'm sure we'll be going back

Thank you for your review - its always good to get feedback from guests and to know that the ideas we suggest for activities and places to visit are well received.

Alnwick Castle has reopened for the summer again and has lots of exciting events and attractions on. Another fav of ours is the trip out to the Farne Islands by boat. The puffins are returning to the islands to nest now so its well worth the trip out to see them.

We look forward to welcoming you to Alnwick Youth Hostel again in the future.

Stayed over a weekend with family and was pleasantly surprised by the standard of the accommodation here. All the usual features of a Youth Hostel (albeit outside the normal YHA network) and very clean, tidy and organised. Bedrooms very comfortable and some with en-suite too, plus family rooms seem to be near kitchen and lounge which is really helpful.

The SC kitchen is great and has everything you need with a nice big breakfast room to enjoy a pre-ordered breakfast if desired.

Other reviews mentioned bus noise but this is not really an issue.

All local attractions are easy to access from here (e.g., Holy Island, Bamburgh, Alnwick Gardens).

As with all YH and YHA the prices seem to be creeping up since we first joined and tend to be inline (or sometimes higher) than other small hotels. I think YH/YHA is a personal preference rather than a cost-saver (esp where family rooms are concerned).

Room Tip: Near kitchens and lounge

Thank you for your review - glad to hear you had a great stay.

You will find all our rooms, even the dorm rooms, are ensuite - no long walks down drafty corridors in your towel here!

As an independent hostel within the YHA network, we need to raise sufficient revenue to cover our operating costs and allow us to reinvest in the building. Sadly, as a standalone business, we don't have the network to spread our risk, as YHA does. But we hope that the higher standard of facilities and attention to cleanliness helps set us appart from the rest. Locally we still offer the best value accommodation in town! Find us on Facebook for some great money off offers.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Alnwick YH in the future.

Best wishes

Andrew

the breakfasts were generous and tasty, the room, clean, comfortable and not smelly (not always guaranteed in a hostel), and there is a separate lounge and games room. The staff were friendly and there is an excellent pub (the John Bull) not far away. All good.

We found it a wonderful place to stay for the night. The bedrooms and the beds are extremely comfortable with non-squeaky bunk beds. Very pleasant staff and great breakfast. Be aware that check in opens at 4 o clock!

We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Alnwick Youth Hostel. Its always lovely to hear from guests and we very much look forward to welcoming you to Alnwick once more.

I am sure, like many of our guests, you found the 16:00hrs reception open time a welcome difference to the 17:00hrs opening time of hostels in years gone by, and of course once you are checked in you have 24hr access.

We look forward to seeing you again.

The queen meets you as you walk through this hostel (or at least her picture and a chair she sat on when she opened it!)....and if she ever falls on hard times, she could do worse than this place.

The location is very close to town, easy to locate, and a stone's throw from the castle and grounds. The building itself is modern, spacious and clean. The kitchen and dining rooms are excellent. We took a family room for 5 and even had the luxury of a double bunk bed! Staff are really helpful and always chirpy. Decent lounges and a small games area and TV room make it an excellent base.

This place was good value for money, meaning five of us stayed for half of what we would have at any local hotel. Why would you go anywhere else?

Minor downsides are finding on-street parking (though there is a car park nearby), and its location bang next to a bus stop and church means you may get some background noise. But we didnt care. We just lay back and thought of England.... and the queen!

Room Tip: if there are rooms at the rear... you might get less street noise

We just returned from a visit here and this has become one of our top hostels anywhere. It is in a perfect spot, easy to walk to the town , which hosts the equally fabulous Alnwick Castle and Gardens. The hostel was clean, friendly, secure and spacious. The rooms were very comfortable with high ceilings spotless bathroom and comfortable bedding. Rooms were quiet at night. There are two common rooms filled with games, books, videos and fun things for families. One room was more of a quiet lounge room while the other had a more active feel. My children LOVED it and kept wanting to come back from our day out to play at the hostel. Great stocked kitchen for self cooking and nice, new and clean dining room which we used for both the bought breakfast and our own cooked food. Supplies were well stocked and there were two fridges for visitor use. Housed in a historical building it was unique yet thoughtfully and nicely updated. So great!

Room Tip: Rooms were quiet at night. The most noise was from the church bells chiming on the quarter hours...
