Description: Open every day except Christmas Day, 9:30-17:00. (Last orders for hot food, 16:00 Winter; 16:30 Summer) The Station Buffet is owned and operated by Barter Books - one of the largest secondhand bookshops in Britain and the home of the famous Keep Calm and Carry On poster. The inviting ambiance includes an open fire in three of the rooms, while the menu specializes in the owners' own preference for comfort food at its best - all of which is home-made, using local produce whenever possible. This ranges from soups to bacon sandwiches to Northumbrian rarebit to baked goods to die for! Also on offer: barista coffee, teas, hot chocolate - and, yes, wine, too!

Visited many times over the years as we are avid book collectors! Once again there last Sunday this place is getting busier every time we go and no wonder given the setting and the great use of local produce. First the service is always brilliant but it is the food that I am sure is the draw for the multitudes. Cooked to order using ingredients from nearby to absolutely fabulous results. On arriving into the main room you are greeted by a glass counter containing an array of home baked cakes, buns, fruit breads etc. very difficult to ignore or to choose. The blackboard always has some tempting specials and what with the choice on the menu it can take some time choosing from the sausage sandwich to the home made soups to the plough mans and on and on over the years we have tried them all and never disappointed!

Worth stopping if you are in the area, we always do. Love the coffee and home made cake. Always busy though so get there early. Great Book Shop, with a great little cafe, what more do you need ?

I've eaten here several times as I frequently visit the book store. Always good. If I'm picky the food from the cold counter is sometimes a little cold for my taste but that's it. Last time I visited was 3 April 2013. The place was packed and all the rooms fairly full despite being quite late on. I had wanted only a pot of tea this time but the lovely aroma of cinnamon made me order cinnamon toast too. The best cinnamon toast ever. I really like the fact that you feel you are still in the old station. Taken several other people there over the last few years and would recommend to anyone.

Visited When at Barter Books. It's always busy and the soups are excellent. There is always a good selection of cakes so what else is needed in a cafe?
