I love coming to Oundle from Peterborough - it's so elegant without all those dreadful bookmakers, poundland shops and - worse still - payday loan outlets. Peterborough City Council please take note.

Normally when in Oundle I eat at the very pleasant Rose and Crown pub. Last Saturday, trying to avoid the very heavy rain, I popped into Dexter's for lunch. For a tad over twenty quid I had a two course meal plus a large glass of red wine. One cannot complain in terms of value for money. The food really was a cup above the Rose and Crown: for the starter I had a large fishcake with a fried egg on top and salad leaves. Loved the combination. For the main meal I had the daily pie option - steak and ale. Pie presented in its own little bowl, puff pastry with plenty of meat and gravy, plus mashed poptato and a nice medley of carrots and courgettes. Very filling. Will definitely come back in the future.

I've been to Dexters many times and yet each time there is something that disappoints. Dexters is the sort of place you want to love. It aspires to be a quality bistro, the sort of place you visit regularly because it's too nice not to. But the quality just isn't consistent. For example, on this visit, the service was friendly but the fish and chips was very disappointing indeed. And when you're really in the mood for fish and chips, and the batter is soggy and unappetising, then there's nothing quite like that disappointment. I mean, how hard can it be?

On previous visits it's been the staff who have let the side down. Either inattentive, disinterested or incompetent. Poorly trained staff are a sure fire way to ruin even the nicest dinner.

If only they could get it right, and be as consistent as their sister restaurant, the White Swan at Woodnewton, which, by the way, never disappoints.

We're lucky enough to live a few minutes walk from Dexters and as a result go there a lot! The service is exceptional, the staff are super friendly and attentive and the food is brilliant! The baked camembert is out of this world, we can't not have it every time we go...only downside is we end up getting so stuffed we never make it to dessert! The portion sizes are just right and the best bit are the daily offers- our favourites are Monday burger and a beer for £10 and Wednesday night 2 courses for 2 plus a bottle of wine for £35! You can't beat it!

Came accross this place when looking for lunch in Oundle. As the weather was good we sat outside and enjoyed the sunshine. We had a glass of wine and a sandwich. I had a ham salad sandwich and my husband had a prawn and crab cocktail, both of which were very good. The bread was very fresh and either home made or locally baked - definitely not what I call plastic, mass produced bread. Service was very good and I would eat there again
