“Staff very good, rooms excellent for female traveller's breakfast could be better”
Reviewed June 16, 2014

Stayed here last week, excellent access, lovely hotel, well furnished and good facilities, particularly for female travellers e.g. hair dryer by the mirror and good lighting! Staff and room service also excellent. Only downside was the buffet breakfast with bacon overcooked and dried up and the rest not up to 4 star quality in my view.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments following your recent stay with us.

The team here will be delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and we are glad that the little touches are appreciated.

I am though disappointed that you didn't feel that the breakfast offering was suitable, we offer a range of items, from freshly baked pastries, fresh fruits, yoghurts, juices and cooked to order items, as well as the hot buffet items. I will be reviewing with the team your comments to ensure we are consistent in are delivery.

I hope however that you will return in the future and give us the opportunity to make your next stay with us a memorable one for all of the right reasons.

Best Wishes

I stayed here for 3 nights with a group of a dozen or more on business which included working in conference rooms during the day as well as overnight accommodation. The accommodation is very good, large spacious bedroom with all mod cons and, unlike some places, the free wifi worked everywhere. Everywhere is clean and well maintained. Bar staff are particularly attentive and it was a major bonus to find 2 good real ales on tap. Sadly had zero time to explore the spa. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful which helps to make up for the odd shortcoming. The main one of these was the fish course Tuesday evening which many of us chose and everyone sent back largely uneaten. It arrived stone cold and was mostly uncooked. That apart the food was OK but unexceptional. If you're not into fried breakfast the options are pretty limited, all desserts are unimaginative and lunchtime hot food in the cafe is marred by drying out under the heat lamps. Overall though a good experience.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for us.

I'm obviously delighted to learn of your comments about the team, but disappointed to learn that the normal high standards of food served hasn't been consistent, which I will be reviewing with the team and for this I would like to express my sincere apologies.

I very much hope we'll be able to welcome you back to the hotel and I know that we’ll be doing all we can to demonstrate that this was a one-off lapse for us, and hopefully you will be able to find the time to enjoy some time in the spa on your next visit.

Kind Regards

We stayed here with our two young sons to break up a long journey. We arrived late (10.30) but instantly were very pleased with our choice. A huge room, with room for all of us (and more!), a mini spa robe for our eldest, a fridge stocked with little free treats and lots of other nice touches.
In the morning breakfast was fantastic. Despite having a messy 6month old and a fickle 4 year old to serve, we were treated well.
The spa facilities are great, again, nice touches like a treasure chest full of floats etc. for the kids to enjoy, and poolside hot drinks.
We left fully relaxed and ready for the next bit of the journey. Our eldest son loved it so much he keeps requesting that we "go to a hotel again"!

Many thanks for your kind comments following your recent stay with us.

I was delighted to hear how much your children enjoyed all of the extras we put in to make it that much more enjoyable for our younger guests. I hope that when you “go to a hotel again” you will consider choosing a Shire Hotel again to experience again.

Myself and my husband have just returned from a two night stay here and were delighted with the wonderful service and relaxed atmosphere that we experienced. Everything ran smoothly from checking in, to having dinner in the restaurant, and the spa was just heaven!! I'm heavily pregnant at the moment and was looking forward to a weekend away from the hustle and bustle- a chilled out weekend with nice food and facilities all included and that is EXACTLY what we got. The hotel was busy with weddings and other functions however, these events were kept private from the other guests and did not interfere with the attention that we received. Thank you for a lovely stay- We will definitely be coming back for a return visit with the kids!!!

On average I use this hotel at least one night a week and have done for many years. Felt it was time to write a review. Not worth deliberating on the areas that don't deliver as they are few and far between. This place really is excellent, the food, staff and overall experience at this hotel are first class

We went away for our anniversary weekend and found this place was excellent the food was great the spa relaxing room lovely and comfortable would recommend a visit and don't be put off by the fact it is just off the A14 we did not here any traffic noise they also do weddings and have a great venue for this there were 2, weddings while we visited. Just down the road there is a retail park and Odeon cinema and it's only a short drive into Kettering itself.

Overall, it is a very nice hotel, the rooms are well equipped and well decorated, location is pretty good for the town and it's amenities, and also for access to the A14, although depending on how sensitive you are to noise, it could be an issue, as the road is very close to the hotel, and although the secondary double glazing does mute most of it, there is still a low level of background traffic noise.

Fresh milk and complimentary water in the fridge are always welcomed, as was the well stocked tea and coffee making facilities.

Beds are comfortable, en-suite bathroom is nice, although the shower was a bit hit and miss and seemed to run hot and cold throughout.

The onsite restaurant was also nice, we had dinner on a Saturday evening and it wasn't very busy, it's reasonably priced, and of good quality, service was also good.

Breakfast was also of good quality, the granola in particular was very nice, there was a good selection of cereals, pastries and hot food, pretty much everything you'd expect, service again was good.

Now the flaws, front of house service was poor, there was no information provided on check-in, we were just told where our room was, and nothing else, it would have been nice to have been given a brief summary of the amenities (spa times, breakfast / dinner times and locations etc etc), but there was nothing, which is a shame as this is the first impression that you get when you check in, obviously you can ask, but in a 4 star hotel, you really shouldn't have too.

On to the spa, the pool is nice, and the whirlpool, sauna and steamroom are all very nice, but the lack of comfortable seating, and area's to relax in was disappointing, for a hotel this size, the number of loungers is very limited, plus you get people putting their towels on the loungers early and just leaving them there, which is unfortunate as the only places left to sit are on the hard upright seating scattered around the edge of the pool.

Overall, value for money is very good, and the hotel in general is very good, if the flaws with the front of house could be corrected, and the spa seating somehow improved it would be an excellent hotel.
