Most amazing house with little restriction when walking about, very helpful people in each room who really knew what they were talking about.

i recently went to canons ashby and was suprised by the amazing place i loved every thing about the house. the staff were friendly and well informed and the tea rooms and home made cakes were to die for.the gardens and surrounding area was so breath taking a mustt for all visitors to go and see.i quite like the fact that its not to far from where i live, in fact i loved it so much i worked voluntary there so i could enjoy it all the time.

Sometimes stately homes can be a bit overwhelming , just too many rooms, too many passageways too much info, it can become an ordeal to get to the exit!!
Canons Ashby isnt like that its a small country house with nice gardens and plenty to see with informative friendly guides( some house guides seem to think they are guards), theres plenty of info in books in each room if theres something your really interested in.
Really enoyed our visit here, nice coffee at cafe, good second hand bookshop in the stable.
Oh and you can try your hand at croquet on the lawn.

House opens quite late (13:00) so plan accordingly. There is a tea room that serves some hot food, teas, coffee. It's not a full restaurant though. The staff are enthusiastic about the property and were keen to speak about the various rooms. It's a family house, not a grand stately home. The family were comfortable, not super rich and the house, decor and furnishings reflect this.
The kitchens are on the tour (unlike quite a few NT places we have visited recently) that gives an up-stairs, down-stairs feel to the route. We visited Canons several years ago and as other reviews mention, the gardens have improved significantly. They are modest, fitting the house and have a good mix of flower beds and working garden.
It's not enough for a whole day, but take in a surrounding NT place and you'll have a good day.

Canons Ashby is a peaceful and beautiful place. The house, which originates from Elizabethan times, has several interesting features which you can hear about from a guide if you take an early “taster session" before the property opens for free movement of visitors. The house and garden have splendid views over the countryside and the nearby church, once part of a large monastery is well worth seeing. The volunteers at this NT site were extremely enthusiastic as well as very welcoming and, as usual, the attached tearooms were excellent. Although relatively small, the shop has some tempting gifts.
