“Disappointing and dirty - don't stay in the Badby Room”
Reviewed February 20, 2013

From outside, The Windmill seams a beautiful old country inn and you imagine yourself on a cold night being seating inside with a glass of something in a comfy seat near a roaring fire... well the dream stops at the side door entrance to the hotel. The area where reception should be is ugly (see photo) there is broken and dusty furniture stored in every nook and cranny. The large fireplaces and log burners are not in use, with plug in electric heaters favoured instead. Not sure if the place is under refurbishment or always like this as the bar area seemed half finished and the restaurant (the only place with comfy seats) not in use. Service was friendly but very slow to the point we thought we'd been forgotten about several times although the food was good once it arrived.
The 'Badby' room initially looked nice but on closer inspection was very poor. Filthy skirting boards and tops of plug sockets, ? mud splatters over electric heater, puddle on bathroom floor. There was no headboard on the bed and only one thin pillow provided each, meaning if you are sitting in bed you have to lean against the cold external wall. I had to ask three times for extra pillows as it seems once the bar is open there is no one on duty for the hotel and you are ignored. The room was also very noisy as it is above the gents toilets. The mattress on the bed was the worse I have ever experienced in a hotel and so old we couldn't get comfortable with the metal springs digging in. We were so close to just checking out at 3am and driving home but eventually did get a few hours sleep waking up aching and feeling bruised. Breakfast was okay and served very quicky in the morning so obviously all pre-cooked but unfortunately this included the toast. How hard can it be to cook toast fresh to order for your guests and it makes all the difference...
On check out the young girl seemed disinterested in our issues. She said she'd speak to management but no-one bothered to contact us - hence this review

Windmillinn, Owner at The Windmill at Badby, responded to this review, February 20, 2013
Thank you very much for your review. It is always great to receive good reviews, but the reality is that this can lead to complacency, and as an owner the buck effectively stops with me. The review was observed at 7pm weds night, which seems ironic as only two hours previous I was discussing and reviewing with my senior staff the very subject of the majority of your comments. It hits home that we are not susceptible to bad reviews with the majority concerning staff and decor. Your room should not look like that and this will be focused upon. The breakfast are always prepared to order and again this will be looked at. This industry is going through a very tough period at present and with operating costs souring cuts are made and things overlooked. We are a small business and many of the staff multitask and with this mistakes happen. Your review highlights exactly how we need to move forward and tighten up on the smallest of details. Believe it or not the beds are just two years old, and I have been in a 6 month wrangle with Dreams about the quality only to be hit with their 12 month warranty excuse. I have literally just ordered 6 mattresses that are arriving on Friday. The Dreams ones will be placed in their store on Friday afternoon. The only request I have is that you remove the photos as they will not reflect the premises going forward. We have been refurbishing as we go forward and I believe that it will take another 6 months to get the building to its finished stage.

Just spent a weekend walking as part of a group of 12 people and using the Windmill as our base. Great food, fantastic hospitality, lovely rooms, excellent beer and a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

Steve and his team worked their socks off for us, accommodating our ever changing plans despite being incredibly busy. My only wish would be for more comfy seating in the bar area.

Already planning next year's walking.

Room Tip: The Windmill Room is definately the best.

As with all my reviews i will be as honest as i can . The windmill is better than average but its not quite got to very good yet "good" would be a better term to use but the T.A rating system hasn't got that in its system .
I stayed there for one night in the middle of January in the mid week on business , i have stayed here twice before and i am sure it's now got new owners in .Any way the first time i stayed the rooms and bar area looked a bit tatty and in need of decorating this seems to have been addressed now with the bar being moved to give more room and the decor re-done also the rooms have been spruced up .
My room was very clean with with tea and coffee making facilities ,hair drier and sky T.V although the flooring around the shower cubical was coming away ( a simple gluing back job ) . The electric radiator in the room did make a buzzing sound but after a couple of beers i had no problem sleeping .
The food in the pub is of a good standard there where quite a few locals in having a meal always a good sign , the breakfast was excellent and very filling and served within minutes of being ordered .
There is a good sized car park at the back of the pub but when i was there it was quite deep in snow and with the car park being up a steep hill with two sharp bends and no grit salt being spread it made getting up and down a bit exciting ! .
There can be a problem with some mobile phone signals as Badby is in a bit of a dip in the landscape but what i saw of the place it seems nice enough . There is also another pub a short walk away from the Windmill . The village of Badby is only a short distance from the industrial estates of Daventry aprox three miles so that puts the Windmill in the ideal place to stay. If i come back down here again on business i would have no problem staying at the Windmill again .

I have just returned from spending a night at the Windmill Inn with my dog, Rievaulx, a Cocker Spaniel. We were both made to feel genuinely welcome. I think even more attention was given to Rievaulx. Jacky couldn't do more for us, and the staff in the restaurant made a huge fuss of Rievaulx. The food was generous and tastey. I have stayed in many dog-friendly places, but I have never experienced the level of tolerance shown us - Rievaulx is not the best behaved dog when out of his comfort zone!!

The village has a lovely feel to it, with the residents being extremely friendly, and we had a great muddy walk to Fawsley Manor. It was a very relaxing weekend and a place I would definitely recommend to all dogs and their humans.

What a lovely place the windmill is, me and my partner spent a night here to relax and get away from the every day life, it didn't disappoint, we were greeted by the owner and he was very polite, even offered to take our bag, showed us to our room and even put the heating on for us which was a nice touch. We stayed in the windmill room and wow is the first word that came from my mouth, lovely big room with a 4 poster bed in, defo get this room if you can.

We had dinner here also, with a log fire burning and was lovely due to the poor weather and lots of snow outside, dinner didn't disappoint with lovely food and the portions were just right. If your thinking food is overpriced well its not for the quality you get.

In the morning our shower didn't have no hot water so when we spoke to a lady about this she was up and sorting it out right away, due to the cold weather the boiler was freezing but they gave us another room just to get a shower which I think was lovely and the situation dealt with straight away. Can't wait to stay again and will recommend to family and friends

A family group of 6 was made very welcome by the landlord. We chose a larger table not in the main bar but the landlord was quick to put some supplementary heating on and he served us both food & drinks which was nice. Food was all of good quality & piping hot. The men said the cask ales were well kept. We might well look to stay here on another occasion. Decent car park up the hill just behind the pub.
