First time visit to the Tan Hill. Heard all about it from Everest years ago.
Anyway, double glazing aside, the pub is about half way from Walney to Whitby.
Even more important the fire is lit, the beer is good and the Landlord is a star.
Once he detected we were on a charity ride 50 smackers were on the table. Incredible.
Tough ride up on the road, and a rough ride down to Bowes, who cares when the pub the welcome and the landlord are that good.

I live in the dales & have been up to Tan Hill a few times - the service has always been notably frosty, but this weekend it was downright aggressive. They clearly have a flow of tourists & cyclists that will continue to come for the novelty, so feel that they don't need to bother making an effort, especially the INCREDIBLY rude manager(?) (I assume so as the staff referred to her as 'boss').

Swaledale is beautiful, but there are plenty of pubs in the dales with better food, lower prices, and most importantly, friendly staff! I would seriously recommend heading to another pub for the 'real Yorkshire experience'. Very disappointed.

Stayed overnight in our camper van last week. Made to feel very welcome on arrival and we parked up alongside the pub. Had a really nice meal and a couple of drinks in the bar. Really interesting place lots of postcards dotted about and funny signs. Loved the clock behind the bar! Staff were great, attentive but not intrusive. The location is fabulous and we did get a small glimpse of what must be a fantastic vista, but then the cloud set in again :-( we woke the next morning to thick fog so we knew it was summer !! It was very cold up there but we enjoyed our stay and our evening meal immensely. In fact we plan to go back later in the year if it ever stops raining :-)

Just spent a three night stay at Tan Hill Inn, very welcoming place and got to meet a number of the staff over the three days. Rooms very good, beds comfy, good bathroom facilities and refreshments and tv available in the rooms. Of course the downstairs is where it's at and the bar is fantastic, great atmosphere with music on Saturday night and Sunday lunchtime. Food very good, particularly the Sunday lunch, and a great selection of people dropping in throughout the weekend. A filming crew on day 1, bicycle race on day 2, vintage tractor outing on day 3, together with walkers and campers, and families. Breakfast is very good quality and quantity. Tan Hill is really a unique place to stay and we thoroughly enjoyed the banter with everyone from staff to other visitors we met. Staff work hard to make it a good experience and we were treated very well and will be back!

Just back yesterday for a one night stay. We did try and get another night but it was all booked up, no wonder of course.
The staff are lovely and couldn't have been more helpful and great to talk to.
We had an evening meal and a full English breakfast the next morning. The food was great and you certainly get plenty.
Just want to say, can't wait to go back!!!
