“Fully refurbished and welcoming staff”
Reviewed May 19, 2012

We enjoyed our brief stay at this comprehensively refurbished historic landmark hotel at Scotch Corner, which a few months ago became a Holiday Inn franchise. The staff were all enthusiastic, helpful and friendly. The room was comfortable and the bar food and breakfast were of a good standard. There is also an enticing looking Italian restaurant which on another occasion we would like to try. The ability to record TV programmes for watching later was an unusual and nice feature. An added bonus was the swimming pool (free for guests) at the neighbouring leisure club which was nearing the end of a major transformation. All in all very good value.

Helpful staff, decent Italian restaurant, really clean and modern room. This hotel has had a recent makeover, and as we got a great rate of £44 per night on expedia, its was excellent value. I will certainly stay again.

We booked this hotel after reading the reviews as a stopover on our way to Scotland. Also, we wanted to visit Richmond Castle nearby. We were pleasantly surprised. The room was big, free bottle of water, Kitkat and orange juice in the fridge. The room had a safe and was very comfortable. We opted to eat in the bar as it offered a good choice of food. Ordering the Thai fishcakes was a mistake as it was mostly potatoes. The rest of the dinner made up for it. The service was excellent. After dinner, we decided to go for a swim. You have to walk outside to go over as they haven't linked the hotel with the pool yet. But it's only a one-minute walk. We had the pool to ourselves. It is shallow, about four feet/1.3 metres. There is also a sauna and a jacuzzi. They provide you with a huge towel and a locker to put your belongings. We did not have breakfast as there is a tea/coffee facility in the room and we had some food with us. Although I checked everything on our way out, we forgot our bathing suit on the very very high shower curtain rail. When we phoned, we were given the option of having them posted to us or to pick them up which we did on our return journey. We will definitely use this hotel again and highly recommend. it.

Room Tip: Room 007 is closed to the fire exit and the way to the pool. Except you have to walk around the fro...

Decided to break journey north to have lunch. Stopped many times in the past at the old Scotch Corner Hotel and now it is the Holiday Inn, Darlington. Excellent decision......the place has been completely restyled and it looks very good. Excellent lunch, with attentive staff and the best coffee in an age.
Well worth another visit...may even stop again on the way back down the country...enjoyed it so much

I have driven past this hotel almost every day for the last 4 years and it looked tired and well past it's prime. Despite the recent refurbishment and rebranding to Holiday Inn I imagined it would not be a great place to stay.

However, we have had the builders recently and needed somewhere to stay for a few nights - we chose the Holiday Inn for convenience and checked in with low expectations. we were presently surprised. Lovely reception area, bar and restaurant. Friendly and helpful reception staff. The room was lovely, had been very well refurbished the zircon wad efficient and the bathroom modern and quite spacious. Free wifi, mineral water and a paper for Priority Club members was a real bonus. Thoroughly recommended

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back as they are a little quoted
