“Practically perfect in every way...”
Reviewed November 23, 2012 via mobile

A two night stay in 'the cottage' room over a beautiful November weekend. This was perfect for a romantic stay as it's quirky location (separate from main hotel) felt deliciously private and the lack of shower (we were aware of this on booking) meant more luxuriating in a roll top bath. Its low ceiling does make it feel snug however and wouldn't be to everyones comfort.

Service was attentive but discrete. The styling of the hotel was beautiful - classic furniture and modern art. Dining/ breakfast room - cozy and intimate, but with large tables for two meaning that you had space as a couple rather than any feeling of being packed in. Food - superb. Well cooked breakfast with good selection of options (though I lament the lack of fresh orange juice) and the evening meal was delicious and well thought out. We opted for the 'wine flight' - glasses of wine to suit each course rather than a bottle - and found this a much more fun way to enjoy our meal, especially as the dessert wines complemented perfectly rather than having to finsih a bottle we had chosen to go with our mains.

In summary, it isn't a cheap option so it is somewhere to choose if you want to take you time and you won't be disappointed. Reading other reviews about the owner being 'rather like basil fawlty', my own experience was that it is a man who cares very much about his hotel, the food and welcoming you to this hotel. And yes he has a clear unafraid persona. But he is no Basil. And, if he was, I rather think it could be more of a selling point!

Great to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us.
Your choice of "The Cottage" , with its huge bed and free standing roll top bath, dating from 1650 does have a "quirky" private feel about it with its own private entrance, glad you were comfortable.
The restaurant, service and facilities are the same for all our guests and we are very pleased we exceeded expectations in all areas.
We are very passionate about what we do, and proud of it, so it is nice to have it recognised.
"Basil" says thank you, even he has his good moments, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

I travel throughout Scotland and Northern England on a weekly basis so I know a good Hotel when I see one.
Many may fall short, possibly even leave you feeling let down, but not the Frenchgate.

Warm welcome at reception, lovely decor, good room, great food , superb bed and pillows.

Some may say in these reviews " its expensive" , Its not , it's high quality , outstanding value for money accommodation .

Room Tip: Only saw a few! they all looked good !!

From the very start when contacting David about booking a night they were very helpful. Even though we were booked in a small room (late booking) David was upfront about the size of the room and the bed. There was no need to be worried and we had an excellent evening. The service, food and friendliness of staff ensured we had an excellent stay.
We had such a good time I have already booked for my parents to have a meal and spend an evening there as part of their 50th wedding Anniversary as I know they will be so well looked after.
Hopefully won't be too long until we will be returning........

On the last night of our holiday we looked for a hotel to break the journey homewards to Essex from West Scotland and after research we chose Frenchgate as it seemed to be a "special" place to end a wonderful time. From the moment we arrived we experienced the serviceand facilties that you associate with small 5 star hotels. In a Georgian style house in a cobbled street within 5 minutes of Richmond centre with free parking, the owner has createda magical mix of old style with very modern lighting and decor. Our room number 6 was spacious, had a super king size bed, a desk and a superb bathroom. The bar area with Leather seats was unique, red leather, the garden looked lovely but not the weather to inspect it, the food in the evening was first class as was our breakfast which had a wide range on offer. The owner, a wine/drinks buff was excellent in advising and explaining our possible choice of wine for the meal, we could have had the deal where he chose wines for each course, but i had to drive the next morning !!!. My much beloved had asked for a Gin and Tonic before the meal and was advised to chose Hendricks Gin, even I as a non Gin drinker could see that it was, as was explained to us in detail, a Gin to out taste all others.
Would we return, yes definitely, will we recommend it yes definitely,

So please visit it when you can, the area around Richmond gives access to wondeful places and the A66 takes you in an hour to the Lakes and beyond.

Room Tip: Number 6 was special

We stayed a couple of weeks ago. Room was wonderful, bed comfortable, great breakfast, good service and an easy stroll into Richmond. Would return here if in the area and frankly would even make the hotel the reason for a trip to the area.

I was looking for somewhere "REALLY SPECIAL" for our Wedding Anniversary, I always like to do something as a surprise for my lovely wife!
Well I spoke to David at some length prior to booking, great to talk to and I was totally confident when we arrived that OUR one night stay was going to be EXCEPTIONAL and "YES" it really was!!
When we arrived we were greeted by David who treats everyone as a special person, unlike the experience you get in most hotels..

We stayed in that very special "Mousey Thompson" room, WOW!!

Yes it is a WONDERFUL room, the bed is so very special, huge, superb lighting and a brilliant nights sleep followed.
Superb en suite, remote control shower, jacuzzi bath again with great lighting, and of course underfloor heating with a slate floor. Yes another "WOW!"

We had a lovely evening meal, cooked to perfection with surperb personal service from David
and Paul who educated me on my "wine flight," which was a very enjoyable experience.

Following a delicious breakfast, a nice chat with David, Paul and Clare on reception we left after a "REALLY SPECIAL" wedding anniversary.

Room Tip: For something special choose the Mousey Thompson room.

Stayed two nights whilst on a walking holiday in the area with a friend - our rooms were both very good and the food amazing. Breakfast was superb - wide choice, and the evening meal equally so.
Will certainly stay again when in the area.
