Visited here in november 2013. The interior is very inviting and homely, we did not book and arrived early evening we were shown to a table and told that not booking was not a problem, the place was quiet , we thought it was the time of year and the fact the place is fairly well off the beaten track. We were seated and ordered our food the place suddenly began to fill up and before too long the place was almost full. The food came and once we tucked in it was blatantly obvious why it was getting busy. The food was fabulous, guinea fowl stuffed with black pudding and all the trimmings veg cooked to perfection, spaghetti carbonara, both dishes were served perfectly and plenty of it, just squeezed a sweet in, only just though.. Prices were very reasonable and when we return to Richmond in november this year we will be returning. Very much recommend this eatery

In the midst of a military training area lies the hamlet of Downholme and it's watering hole, The Bolton Arms. A surprisingly eclectic menu led to she who must be obeyed having garlic mushrooms followed by gammon with me taking the black pudding stack. Starters were great with the salad that accompanied the black pudding nicely dressed. Both mains were served with homemade chips and the only slight criticism being my steak slightly overdone. However this was outweighed by the quality if the ingredients and the portion size , which is large. Purely in the interests of producing a full review I sacrificed the waist line and tucked into a homemade tiramisu which was stunnig with she who must be obeyed having a huge eton mess. A quick nosey glance around the other diners revealed that all the portions are generous, the fish and chips looked amazing and ,frankly, the cheese board could easily be shared between 2. Probably a good idea to book as it was busy. Overall well worth the short trip from richmond over the somewhat desolate dales and cattle grids. Sorry could not advise about the wine list, this is North Yorkshire where we sup ale and the Timothy Taylors landlord was a fine example of that brew being kept impeccably.

We arranged a family reunion in Richmond for the Bank Holiday weekend and booked a table for an evening meal at the Bolton Arms as we have eaten there on a number of occasions and have always enjoyed excellent food and great hospitality from the owners and staff. Our party of five slected a range of differing meals, worthy of special note the Seafood Pancake and Black Pudding starters which were absolutely delicious.Their Steak and Ale pie and Beef strips in Dijon mustard sauce were also a great hit with us.
The Bolton Arms is a traditional country pub in a lovely setting, full of character and charm. The Landlord (Steve), who is also an excellent Chef, his wife (Nicola) and the staff always make us feel very welcome and we look forward to our next meal there again in the not too distant future.
Highly recommended!!

Just by chance I was passing, popped in and will do the same again. Well worth the stop! The food was fantastic, perfectly cooked Salmon with veg. A good size meal, very good value. On the warm evening, I sat outside looking down into a valley, scenery is great.
Pub in good location with a smallish car park, the welcome was warm, the choice of food was extensive and a great evening was had. A must stop pub!!!!!!!

We were on a 10 day break in Northallerton during May and was intending to drive to Reeth. The road to Reeth was closed and we went on a diversion and came across The Bolton Arms. What a great find this was! We had a fabulous bar snack, the steak and onion baguette, really tasty and the bread had been freshly baked. Staff were very friendly and service good despite it being really busy in the restaurant area. Fabulous views too from the dining room, lovely green fields laden with little Spring lambs at that time. The locals who were on a nearby table to us were so friendly and really funny and 'entertaining' including us in conversation. Will most definitely go back on our next trip to North Yorkshire and hope to eat in the main restaurant-- a fabulous place.
