I only stayed for a night at Millgate House, but would have loved to stay longer. The house is full of exciting furnishings, paintings and prints that can be enjoyed walking to your room, during a great breakfast in the dining room, or simply wandering around with pleasure. There's also a little section up the stairs where a diverse selection of books can be stravaged through. And then you wander into your room - mine had great views, warm carpets and a cosy chair from which to view the scene and relax. The garden awaits, when the snow retreats. Thanks Austin for being a great host!

I have just stayed at Millgate House for the fourth time. Each time I have taken different friends or family, as I know that they will love the eclectic but luxurious artistic environment, the superlative breakfasts (my favourite of anywhere) and Tim and Austin's ability to allow you to feel at home at the same time. The open invitation to pop in to the kitchen to take a jug and fresh milk makes it feel like a family welcome, instead of the formality that the oppulent surroundings might otherwise suggest. My friends were in the garden flat, which had the added homliness of allowing us to stay in and cook for ourselves over one cold night of the long weekend. I was in the twin room overlooking the garden, and felt like I had my own living room up there as the room was so big. I tested this out with a day in alone, just reading. Bliss. Also, the walls are obviously thick as approaching my room on my last evening I heard the voices of several people from the room next to mine, and feared an evening having to try to ignore them. However as soon as I was in my room and closed the door I did not hear them at all.

Room Tip: see review re garden flat and en suite twin overlooking the garden. However I have stayed in the les...

A stay at Millgate house is exceptional and unique in so many ways that a whole new category of excellence needs to be invented. It is difficult to list all its charms but they must include the wonderful, eclectic collection of antiques, pictures and furnishings, the characterful, luxurious rooms, the beautiful garden, the sensational breakfast, and the charming and efficient staff. Perhaps the main ingredient of this perfect recipe is the hospitality of Tim and Austin, the owners, whose warmth, individuality and impeccable taste pervade all aspects of the Millgate house experience. We went with our extended family, including four children and elderly parents, all of whom enjoyed it immensely. Our children have decided we should live there! Our next visit could not come too soon.

"The best!"...

Well we are always thinking are there any new or fresh things to say and low and behold you have found many!

Would that everyone was as enthusiastic as you and your supremely sensitive, thoughtful children.

"A whole new category of excellence..." is quite a label...
"sensational breakfast" another high accolade.

Its hard to avoid all the cliches and catch phrases of the millions of reports that pour onto the web but your feed back is some of the most rewarding and refreshingly intelligent that we have ever received. We were particularly touched by the children telling you that you were all coming to live here!!!! A first!!!

Thankyou for your kind words.

Many guests rave about the stylish and friendly service that comes so naturally at Millgate House.. Others are totally overawed by the eclectic furnishings, including whippets, that have made this 'one off' guesthouse so incredibly popular. However, it's only after you've had the owners cater for a private dinner party, that you fully appreciate why their Five Star Status most definitely applies to their culinary skills too.

Just recently, I helped to organise a dinner party to celebrate the Fifth Anniversary of a highly successful social enterprise. The Directors of the organisation concerned wanted to mark the occasion in a special way by personally thanking loyal supporters and selected Millgate House to provide the hospitality.

Guests, who came from as far away as Hong Kong, appreciated the superb quality of the food, the gracious presentation and most importantly, the exclusivity offered by this fabulous setting.

Millgate House doesn't provide evening meals to their 'overnight guests'; only superb breakfasts, but if you have an occasion that requires private fine dining, nothing gets better than this place

Room Tip: If you happen to be spending the night as well as enjoying a private meal, ask for one of the rooms...

It was an honour and a pleasure to host such a distinguished and appreciative group.

As a "birthday" party it was one of the most civilsed parties we have hosted.

Thankyou for your kind comments.

Millgate House in Richmond, North Yorkshire, must be one of the classiest B&Bs in Britain - if not the world. It is an elegant C18 town house (plus converted coach house at the garden’s end) directly off the historic town’s cobbled market place. Guests eat off antique silver and pour their breakfast tea from C18 teapots. Their rooms are furnished with Georgian furniture (except the showers, which are absolutely modern.) There are oriental rugs on the floors and good pictures on the walls. There’s even a library of readable books.

Then there is the award-winning garden, a long slope filled to bursting with old roses, hostas, herbs and shrubs. Climbing roses wreathe around the house’s iron balconies. Guests can sit here with a cool wine or a hot book in the evenings.

I recommend Millgate to all my appreciative friends, which is maybe why it’s not always easy to get a favourite room. And, if you happen to want to throw a party for 40 during your stay, Austin and Tim will give everyone a brilliant, gourmet meal. Bed and Breakfast doesn’t begin to cover the charms of Millgate House.

It is always thrilling to read new, positive reviews, especially when they come from someone with powerful credentials such as editor/journalist/food writer, such as yourself. And based not on one but many many visits. We know how high your standards are so to have such an enthusiastic report is very encouraging. Sorry about the favourite room and your next visit...maybe don't tell too many friends!!!! We have managed to squeeze you into the 1720s room which you have sampled before and liked! Thankyou again for your insightful comments.

We have known Millgate House and its award-winning garden for many years and have been privileged to have enjoyed Tim and Oz’s hospitality and culinary expertise on many occasions. Therefore it came as no surprise that they had dreamt up a new and ever more delightful use of their house: a venue for intimate concerts of classical music. The musicians on this first occasion were world-class players of the viols, Susanna Pell, Wendy Gillespie and Bill Hunt, who had met when they were members of Fretwork. They played and introduced for us music of the Elizabethan and Commonwealth periods, all of it suited ideally to a domestic setting rather than the concert hall. An audience of perhaps 50 was in this way transported to another world. This and the wine ably dispensed by Millgate’s highly competent staff gave us all an evening of rare delight. More please.

As a recent reviewer said... "Bed and Breakfast doesn't begin to cover the charms of Millgate House"...We do aim for the different, the charming, the quirky, the unique, the outstanding...hence the experimental evening with the viols which you and many others loved so much. Yesterday we did a snowdrop day as another experiment. We hope to throw a few more new things into the pot this year...along with all the usual or not so usual things we do here at Millgate. We are already working with the Walking and Book Festival, the next exciting exhibition at Bowes, the Swaledale Music Festival and the organisers of the international photographic exhibition Top Shots(see the website site). Vive la difference!

The welcome at Millgate House was warm and inviting, the accommodation beautiful and the views of the garden and the river totally outstanding. We enjoyed sitting and thumbing through the eclectic collection of books in our beautifully warm and peaceful room. A wonderful night’s sleep was followed by a generously delicious breakfast in the fabulous dining room complete with a cheery log fire. A really special place.
