What to say that hasn't been said before?!! Just back from an absolutely delightful and memorable weekend at Millgate which surpassed all of our expectations - tenfold.
In these days of the pretentious, pompous "boutique" hotel, full of self-importance, where showy and naff all too often go hand in hand, Millgate is the antithesis. This venerable building is home to all that is good - it has clearly been furnished with love and an impeccable eye - exquisite furniture, stunning paintings, glorious rugs, amazing artefacts, an abundance of really cracking books etc etc. But this is no museum - this is every much a home which guests have the privilege of sharing for a short time.
My husband's oft repeated mantra is "Brevity is an art" so I will try to briefly concentrate on what made Millgate so special - for us. Was it the offer of a glass of wine on arrival? Was it the appearance of the little vase of snowdrops on our bedside table? Was it the best nights sleep in the most comfortable super-king (Jensen) bed with its Siberian goose down duvet and fine linens? Was it the stunning view of the countryside, from that bed, with our morning cup of tea? Was it Tim's splendid home-made marmalade or Austin's "to-die-for" mushrooms at breakfast? Was it the fact that the fire in the grate had been lit before breakfast - just for us - each morning? Was it the sound of the grinder in the kitchen reasurring us that our coffee was indeed freshly ground - and yes, it was sensational! Was it the sublime sound of the baroque music, which sent shivers down my spine, as we ate our PERFECT breakfast? Was it the three elegant whippets, somehow so in keeping with their surroundings? Was it the harmonious ambience - peaceful, calm, relaxing ....... Actually it was all of these things and many, many more......
But above everything else it is Tim and Austin who give Millgate it's magic. Unquestionably passionate about what they do they are two of the most charming, unaffected, warm, generous, erudite, interesting and spirited individuals we have had the pleasure of meeting - they are an absolute delight!
Like so many others we are now smitten and will be making our way back to Richmond whenever we can .......
Millgate is SO not your commonplace B&B - nor is it a flashy, gimmicky "boutique" hotel (seen one - you have seen them all) go and judge for yourself - you CAN'T be disappointed.
Oops - I forgot "Brevity is an art"..............
