What to say that hasn't been said before?!! Just back from an absolutely delightful and memorable weekend at Millgate which surpassed all of our expectations - tenfold.

In these days of the pretentious, pompous "boutique" hotel, full of self-importance, where showy and naff all too often go hand in hand, Millgate is the antithesis. This venerable building is home to all that is good - it has clearly been furnished with love and an impeccable eye - exquisite furniture, stunning paintings, glorious rugs, amazing artefacts, an abundance of really cracking books etc etc. But this is no museum - this is every much a home which guests have the privilege of sharing for a short time.

My husband's oft repeated mantra is "Brevity is an art" so I will try to briefly concentrate on what made Millgate so special - for us. Was it the offer of a glass of wine on arrival? Was it the appearance of the little vase of snowdrops on our bedside table? Was it the best nights sleep in the most comfortable super-king (Jensen) bed with its Siberian goose down duvet and fine linens? Was it the stunning view of the countryside, from that bed, with our morning cup of tea? Was it Tim's splendid home-made marmalade or Austin's "to-die-for" mushrooms at breakfast? Was it the fact that the fire in the grate had been lit before breakfast - just for us - each morning? Was it the sound of the grinder in the kitchen reasurring us that our coffee was indeed freshly ground - and yes, it was sensational! Was it the sublime sound of the baroque music, which sent shivers down my spine, as we ate our PERFECT breakfast? Was it the three elegant whippets, somehow so in keeping with their surroundings? Was it the harmonious ambience - peaceful, calm, relaxing ....... Actually it was all of these things and many, many more......

But above everything else it is Tim and Austin who give Millgate it's magic. Unquestionably passionate about what they do they are two of the most charming, unaffected, warm, generous, erudite, interesting and spirited individuals we have had the pleasure of meeting - they are an absolute delight!

Like so many others we are now smitten and will be making our way back to Richmond whenever we can .......
Millgate is SO not your commonplace B&B - nor is it a flashy, gimmicky "boutique" hotel (seen one - you have seen them all) go and judge for yourself - you CAN'T be disappointed.

Oops - I forgot "Brevity is an art"..............

Well considering you felt it had all been said before this is an amazing review, indeed probably the most sensitive, appreciative review to date, with plenty of new observations.
It is most rewarding for us when people are so aware and sensitive to the finer detail of what we are about. You clearly felt the place was outstanding in everyway which is most heartening for us.
As you rightly observe we aim to avoid the cliche and the naff.
Unique excellence is our aim...thanks for the enthusiastic
encouragement....it maybe a cliche but such praise does make all the hardwork worthwhile!!!

I recently had a fantastic stay at Millgate House; the decor has been further improved since my last visit, the hospitality and level of comfort provided in the room were of the highest standard. The beautiful furniture and art work in this Georgian house make it one of the most special places I know. Austin and Tim of course are exemplary hosts, full of energy and enthusiasm. The food and service provided were outstanding, particularly the range of choice at breakfast. Recommended unreservedly.

I was fortunate enough to hold my husband's special birthday party there. The whole organisation, the food, the ambience, was spectacular. Friends booked in for the night as well and were thrilled with the first class service they received. Beautiful rooms and the best breakfast ever! Many of our guests had never been before and were enchanted by the building and the warmth of their reception. Tim and Austin are the most superb hosts and I truly cannot recommend Millgate House more highly. Go there to celebrate - anything - and it will be an unforgetable experience.

We gave a party for about 40 people to celebrate a special occasion and, as we expected, the evening really lived up to expectations. The food was wonderful - carefully chosen with the advice of Tim and Oz for its seasonal ingredients - and the service was, as ever, discreet, efficient and friendly. Tim and Oz are great hosts but, in many ways, the house was the star. It looked magical on a winter's evening, with candles and gleaming silver and glass, and those guests who had never been before were totally bowled over. It has such a 'wow' factor. Can't recommend it enough.

Every visit seems to bring another moment of interest, pleasure or enjoyment. We first visited millgate house in 1989 and had a wonderful week in the Garden Flat. We have loved going back ever since. The charm and feeling of well being that comes with each visit never seems to diminish and we are already looking forward to our next visit (the last one was only a few days ago). What makes it the outstanding place that it undoubtedly is? The list is long but for starters - the loving care and attention to detail in the house, the breathtaking garden, breakfasts that have everything, incredible views.......and so it goes on. This is all down to Austin and Tim's obvious love for what they do and delivered with a relaxed manner and without any sense of pretension. Of all the places I have stayed throughout the world and over 35 years of travelling and holidaying this is my favourite of them all.

WOW...coming since 1989... hadn't realised we 'd been going that long... what an accolade...your favourite venu...that takes some beating...Clearly you join with many others...customers who left today have been coming since 1990 and have just booked for 2014!!!!.... 3 visits in order to get their dates in! Have just been looking through our visitors list... which includes Alan Bennett, Ruby Wax, Edward Fox, Rt Hon William Hague, Sir Seb Coe, Joanna Trollope amongst many others...
And still our guests are finding original things to say and different aspects of the place to take pleasure in...

Once recent guest compared it to stepping into the set of Downton ... a bit grand!

Thankyou for your sincere and very appreciative comments...always encouraging.

I was fortunate enough recently to have dinner with friends at Millgate House to celebrate my 60th birthday. What a superb evening it turned out to be. From the moment I approached my hosts, Tim and Austin, to discuss the arrangements, to the very end of the event, nothing was too much trouble for Austin, Tim and their fantastic helpers. I was given excellent advice about the menu, suitable wines and even seating arrangements and, as the guests arrived, staff were instantly on hand to welcome them with champagne and canapés as we mingled in the sumptuously decorated drawing room – had we stumbled onto the set of Downton Abbey? Sadly, we had to forego the delights of their fabulous garden as it was rather cold and wet.
The dining room was equally breathtaking, each table being set with beautiful antique glassware and silver. We then took our seats to enjoy a delicious 5 course meal served with amazing efficiency and style. The young staff really are exceptionally professional and charming. Wine and water glasses were never allowed to get empty!
As the evening drew to a close coffee was served in the drawing room and as the guests left they remarked that it was one of the most unforgettable dinners they had ever enjoyed. I had to agree. Exceptional on every level and a real privilege to share the delights of Millgate if only for one brief evening. I can’t wait for my next birthday!

Loved our stay here. We used the basement "apartment" which is wonderful; bag this of you can! And stayed in one of the first floor bedrooms also. The decor is just devine, very tastefully done.
The breakfast alone was worth the stay! Thanks.

Again it says it all when customers return and booked ahead for the next visit months in advance.

Not everybody understands "Old" or "Georgian" or "antiques" .

A period house dating back to 1720 is not every body's cup of tea... nor is antique furniture showing "signs of wear and tear"...its been on the go for nearly three hundred years....and few things remain pristine after that length of time...Its great when people "get it"...authenticity, character, patina and charm....It is increasingly delightful that people appreciate the results of a life time of collecting and placing things....for some it is "clutter"... others are horrified by the time it all takes to polish...and see only the work...but then for recent reviewers it is "heaven"gorgeous" and a source of |"joy and inspiration"...

Long may we have sensitive, enthusiastic, discerning, intelligent guests like the recent ones!
