“Comfortable and welcoming.”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

Review written in the context of undertaking Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk. Accommodation arranged by Macs Adventures. At the top end of Frenchgate so slightly off the route. Warm welcome and farewell. Breakfast room and lounge combined, with a good view over the river. Comfortable room. Evening meals not done. Host recommended good local facilities. Good breakfast at two big tables.

I actually ended up staying here by mistake - there was a bad leak in the B&B I originally booked to stay in. Ralph is quiet and unassuming, but very hospitable. The B&B is tastefully decorated and very clean. I stayed in Room 1, which has the most awesome views over the River Swale and Easby Abbey. A lovely cooked breakfast in a dining room which shares the same wonderful views. Overall, a very pleasant experience.

Room Tip: Room 1 is quieter, being away from the main road and has spectacular views.

Have stayed at Ralph's place several times now when on business in the area.

I have used several hotels and pubs in Ricmond in the recent past, most of which have been fine, but if there's room at the Frenchgate, I prefer to stay in this homely, comfortable Guest House.

As mentioned by others, the view from the breakfast room is superb! As for communal breakfasting, well that's no problem, you get to talk to new folk which can be interesting, for the most part...;-)

Room Tip: They're all good...!

Not the most welcoming host but a decent B&B with amazing views over Richmond.
Our room was huge with nice touches such as water and mints - but no shower gel in a £140 room?
Breakfast is at communal tables with more limited choices than most.

Warm welcome, comfortable, clean room, good shower, good breakfast, conveniently placed for Richmond town centre attractions. We were visiting the town but I think other guests were walkers and they seemed to be well catered for.

Room Tip: Room 7 on the ground floor was actually part of a small suite of two doubles with a bathroom between...

By recent experience on the coast to coast walk I'm for me this is not quite worthy of a very good... but I feel it merits more than an average... so let's call it good.
It's plus points are spectacular views, and it is clean and comfortable. The proprietor is friendly, but there is no "special welcome" of some of the other B & Bs en route. The breakfast is good for cereal choice and fruit, but my bacon sandwich was pretty ordinary, and 2 communal tables of 6 are awkward, particularly as people are arriving and leaving while others have half eaten their meal.

The house is large and charming. Breakfast is ample and varied. The room was extremely comfortable and well-designed with everything that one would need. The ensuite bathroom was spotless and everything worked perfectly. I would certainly stay here again and have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone visiting Richmond.

Room Tip: Rooms facing away from the road have a magnificent view over the valley. Rooms facing the road could...
