We checked the timetable and went to a crossing when the steam train was passing. A lovely sight and very nostalgic .

This really is a delightful heritage railway running some 16 miles along Wensleydale. The pace is gentle and relaxed and the round trip takes a full half day. However, on the day of our visit the train was advertised as steam hauled. Unfortunately this was not the case and the outward leg of the journey was in a rather time-worn diesel railcar which certainly lacked character and harked back to the bad old days of 1970's British Rail! The long suffering but incredibly tolerant and polite volunteer guard was getting rather a lot of flack over the non-appearance of the advertised steam loco. The web site noted that steam was cancelled on the previous Saturday but made no mention of this for the following Tuesday. So the point is that the management failed to ensure the web site was updated nor did they tweet the fact. Not only did they get a train full of disgruntled passengers but they also put the poor (volunteer) guard in a very awkward and uncomfortable position.
One fully accepts that attractions like this are often run largely by volunteers but it is essential that the fare paying public get a reasonable service and that management take their responsibilities seriously. Otherwise it can irreparably damage their reputation. The fact that the return journey was loco hauled, albeit by a diesel, and the unfailing good humour and friendliness of the long suffering guard went some way to restoring faith in the railway. This is a good project and it deserves to succeed but it clearly needs to pay attention to customer satisfaction and the proper use of modern technology.

I am sorry you did not get to experience steam at the railway, unfortunately we also have a volunteer updating the website/Twitter so we can not always update at short notice however I agree this is something we need to improve at.

Thank you for your comments.

As always a lovely afternoon in congenial company. Journey to the end of the line with sandwiches on the way out and cake and scones on the way back - who could ask for more. Weather was kind for once and everyone seemed to enjoy the trip.

There are a few major Heritage Railways in Yorkshire , We've done the NYMR and the KWVR but This was our first visit to this particular one . We decided to try out the newly started (this was it's 2nd weekend) Afternoon Tea Train . Whereas the previously 2 mentioned railways tend to have their dining experiences in Pullman Coaches , the Wensleydale use an ex-LNWR Directors Saloon .

This journey starts from Bedale Station , on this day it was supposed to be stem hauled by the Railways J72 engine but unfortunately it fsiled a boiler test earlier in the day , it's stand in was a Class 20 Diesel . The Coach is absolutely stunning inside and out , the table setting was fantastic .

We were welcomed aboard with a glass of prosecco and headed off west up the line . The Afternoon Tea consisted of a combination of Traditional finger sandwiches , A selection of scones with jam and clotted cream , Sweet pastries and cakes with a choice of tea or coffee . Extra Prosecco is also available to purchase .

The Food and staff are provided by 'Upstairs at Institution' in Bedale , the food was fantastic , everything was extremely fresh and tasty , couldn't have asked for it to be any better . The staff were amazing , very friendly and attentive , a credit to their company !

Have to say the Journey was superb , we've visited and driven through Wensleydale a few times but you get a different view from the train , breathtaking ! Well worth a trip even without the tea !

We'll be returning for the Tea again in the future !!!!

Travelled on this railway from Leeming Bar to Redmire. The journey took about one hour through the most beautiful countryside of Wensleydale. The train was quite quaint but in keeping with the journey. When we arrived at Redmire the Wensleydale Beer Festival was in full swing. Over 100 beers. what a great way to spend lunch time. Stopped off in Leyburn on the return journey for a look round. A most enjoyable day was had by all.
