“Food good, shame about the pub”
Reviewed May 4, 2013

Called here recently for lunch. Menu typical fayre and reasonably priced, we ordered the steak pie and the gammon. We enjoyed our meals although the pie crust was about 4 inches thick! My complaint is about the dining area in the pub, it is very, very drab. Must not have been painted for about 20 years at least . The lighting is dreadful and the tablecloths old and nasty. The waitress who served us did not inspire confidence, she was a little unkempt and her 'white' coat was filthy.

“Proper pub grub”
Reviewed April 16, 2013

While driving round North Yorkshire we stopped off in Knaresborough hoping to find somewhere for a good pub lunch. We couldn't have done better than the Old Royal Oak. This is an oldy worldy pub, with a very friendly and obliging landlord, and a menu of comfort food that was just right on a cold and dismal April day. We thoroughly enjoyed the steak and ale pie with suet crust and the best chips we've eaten in ages. The portions were so large we couldn't find any room for the peas and carrots that accompanied the pie.
The pub also offers accommodation, which from the brochure looks very comfortable and inviting, and we'll be tempted to stay here next time we visit Harrogate.
