“A nice experience on the whole, but:”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2012

We arrived on a crisp and sunny afternoon, the Hotel is impressive from the outside and we were looking forward to our lunch here very much. The inside is just as impressive as the outside, very clean and beautifully decorated. Nice bar area, all very cosy but with a modern twist here and there. We were greeted courteously and had a lovely table in the bright and airy dining room. The staff were helpful and polite and efficient. Only the food let them down. Between us we had crab, soup and duck to start, all rather bland and the soup was just awful. Move on to pork and salmon main courses. The pork was very nicely cooked - it can so easily be dry (well, it is when I cook it!!) but this was nicely moist and very tasty, veg was not overcooked - but the potato, well, i'd say it was smash as did my companion - how very disappointing from a hotel. The salmon was fine though a bit dry, and didn't come with the 'smash'. Puddings were adequate, just a bit too much sugar to make up for flavour, which made them difficult to finish. We felt a little let down. Everything is there to make the experience great, but the reason for being there - the food - is just not quite up to it

Room Tip: we didn't stay over - just lunch

Dear Tracie 433
Thank you for visiting Storm Restaurant at the Dower House recently and for taking the time to write a review. We are delighted that you found the staff helpful and efficient and were equally impressed with the surroundings.

We are sorry that you were disappointed with the mashed potato. We take all guest feedback very seriously, have investigated your points thoroughly and would also like to assure you we only use fresh produce on our menu.

Once again thank you for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Storm Restaurant soon.

With kind regards

We held my husband's birthday party at the Dower House and we couldn't fault a thing. The room itself (the dining room) plus there is a cosy bar with open fire, the food, the friendliness and professionalism of the General Manager and all the staff - everything was excellent! We had a wonderful afternoon. It is just a shame we don't live further away as I am sure this would be a lovely hotel to stay in!

We were a group of older people meeting for a social afternoon in the lounge. The room is lovely, nicely furnished and cosy and was the perfect place for us to meet the Mayor!. The hotel looked after us extremely well, making sure that we had enough refreshments to keep us going. The staff are very friendly and welcoming.

very pleased with our three night stay in this hotel, facilities were spot on and the staff all were on the ball, i couldnt single out one, A great team they seemed all to be very flexible with their work and very keen to intigrate with the patrons .We found this hotel very well placed for exploring Knaresborough and also the train station which we used to visit York. 0ur room was really quaint with traditional oak beams, very comfortable.

Room Tip: room 31 had oak beams ,real authentic.

We wanted a hotel with character we got exactly that. We had a 3 night stay at this hotel and enjoyed every minute. The staff were welcoming and friendly with lots of advice for visiting local attractions especialy in the beautiful little town of Knaresborough and the surrounding area. The room was very comfortable and clean with daily housekeeping. The bar area was comfortable with a good selection of drinks and bar meals. We found that the restaurant had a select menu and the food was cooked perfectly for our taste.

We went with the sole intention of using the spa daily but we were so busy visiting local attractions that we never found the time! So we will be returning to the Dower House in the near future just to try it.

We'd booked the Dower House hotel as a short relaxing break which it turned out to be.

Firstly the negatives...

We contacted the hotel prior to the stay to arrange an early check in of 2pm (1 hr earlier than standard check is) as I'm 5 months pregnant I wasn't sure I'd be able to walk round Knaresbrough until 3, We were told this wouldn't be a problem however on arrival at 2:15 we were told the room wasn't ready so had to go and wait in the pub down the road.

We had also requested a DVD player in the room which also wasn't there but was eventually sorted out for us.

This wasn't the best start to our stay so it looks like no one had read the notes on our booking.

However the rest of the stay was great, the room had a slightly shabby charm to it, things like miss matched lamps and curtains that didn't match the room but the room was clean and comfortable.

I was booked in to a pregnancy massage in the spa which was wonderful and I would defiantly go back for other treatments it is also worth noting that guests in the hotel get a 10% discount on spa treatments.

We had dinner in the restaurant in the evening and the food was lovely, the menu was limited as it is changed weekly and seasonal, but there was something for everyone to be happy with. The quality of the food was great and it was all well cooked, the restaurant setting was nice and the staff were efficient and polite. Matt on the bar was very good, he was friendly and worked very hard he deserves a pay rise!

It was lovely to hear the church bells in the morning from our room,

In the morning we were surprised by the choice and quality of the breakfast it was great, and the revelation that they had won a best breakfast award was no surprise as it really was outstanding.

Check out was efficient and Mel on reception was also lovely and another member of staff who deserved a raise or at least recognition.

All in all we had a lovely weekend and would like to visit again!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 20 at the back of the hotel
