We live over 20miles away and have been here about 6 times now, every time the food as been excellent, friendly staff and good value for money. The food is home cooked, far better than you get from the many chain type pubs who cater for Sunday lunch. Its small and old we love it.

Hi Harry and Maureen,

Thank you so much for your kind comments! I have printed the review off and pinned it up in the kitchen. This reminds the staff why it is important to maintain the standards. When they get tired of scraping and mashing potatoes, peeling carrots, mixing Yorkshire puddings etc. etc.Your review reminds them why. - Can't beat FRESH!

Regards

Mark, Jean & The Old Royal Oak Team.

We stayed here Easter Sunday as a stop off on a driving tour through Derbyshire and Yorkshire. We were welcomed by Mark who did an excellent job of checking us in, showing us to the car park and then taking us to our room and explaining how to use the facilities. He even directed us where to go for the best view in Knaresborough. The room was spotlessly clean, warm and comfortable and was located in a converted livery stable just across the courtyard from the main pub building.
Unfortunately we didn't eat in the pub that night as the menu choice wasn't huge and the only meal we wanted had sold out - I guess the steak and ale pies must be delicious! However, we later found that this was one of the very few places we could have eaten that night in Knaresborough. It was a busy pub that night with a live band on and probably due to the bank holiday they did start to run out of Theakston's ales. However, the noise from the band wasn't an issue when we returned to our room and we had a very comfortable night's sleep.
Breakfast next morning was filling and tasty and very welcome having had no evening meal the night before, with plenty of cups of tea to wash it down with.
All the staff were very welcoming and friendly and I would definitely recommend the Old Royal Oak as a place to stay if visiting the area.

You must visit this little 'gem' of a pub located in the beautiful 'olde worlde' market place of Knaresbrough. The staff are very polite and offer a warm greeting. There is a choice of real ales but you must sample the fayre..........all the food is home cooked to a very tasteful and high standard; which use local grown produce. You have a choice of 'traditional lunches' or a dish from the special menu board.
On our last visit 31/3/13 we chose Sunday lunch of roast beef , yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings, followed by ginger sponge/apple crumble with custard......all very delicious!......
We intend to use their B+B facilities in the very near future.
Strongly recommended, you will not be disappointed!!

There are plenty of accommodation options in Knaresborough, it seems like every pub in the village doubles as a B&B, but you won't be disappointed in the Old Royal Oak. After wandering around for a while, checking out the competition, my boyfriend and I settled on a room at this lively 'locals' pub because the staff were so welcoming and the atmosphere so jovial. Our room was lovely, spotlessly clean, warm and cosy, nicely decorated and included free wi-fi. The rooms are really quiet too, since they're located in building separate to the main pub, just across a small courtyard. It was Kareoke night when we stayed there but we weren't disturbed by any dodgy pub singers murdering Elvis on the mic. Mick the manager loves a chat, happily sharing his local knowledge and offering loads of suggestions for walks. All the rest of his staff are super friendly too, basically you'll be made to feel really welcome here, and the massive full English breakfast will set you up for the day! I'll definitely be going back.

Two night stay,on arrival met by the manager mick and made to feel very welcome. The pub was in a great location and the locals so very friendly. The rooms in the old stables were very cosy, comfortable, warm and spotlessly clean, thanks to Debbie. The breakfasts were good and hearty, but the meals are first rate, (meat pie to die for) extensive menu, good prices and everything home made and it shows. Could not fault any aspect of our stay and hope to return fairly soon. Mark the landlord has a brilliant team. Thanks to all for relaxing couple of days.

Fantastic place to stay. Rooms are nicely furnished, cosy and extremely clean. The bed was very comfortable and you cannot hear any noise from the main pub. Great friendly service from the landlord Mick, who was chatty and attentive. We thoroughly enjoyed our cooked breakfast which was cooked to order and was a very decent portion! The pub was lively and fun on the night we were there. Well priced drinks and bar staff were happy to give recommendations on ciders and beers to try. Great location too. We will definitely visit again!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 5 which was lovely

Hi there,
Thank you for your kind comments. It is always nice to hear your views when we get it right!
I will pass on your comments to Debbie who takes great pride in looking after all the B&B rooms. She even gets on her hands and knees to clean the shower door runners with Q-tips!
Mick (The Assistant manager) does a great job of keeping the beer in tip top condition and is a great asset. The whole team are 1st class.
Please to hear you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to meeting you again should you come back.

Best Wishes,
Mark & Jean
