“Fantastic food and service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013

The food was excellent and the service five star and really made our stay in Hawes. There were six of our family and although we asked if we could mix and match the menus nothing was too much trouble and all meals were delivered at the same time and cooked perfectly. The hotel is lovely, the service is rarely encountered, we will definitely return.

Four of us visited on a busy Saturday night and although we had to wait a little while for service the food more than compensated. Two of us shared the goats cheese & red onion tart to start, which was delicious. Our friend wanted the soup but decided it would be too filling so our waiter (son of the owner we understand) offered to serve a small cup instead of a bowl. It came in a cup and was excellent, what's more we were only charged £1 for it! For main courses, we ordered the Wensleydale cheese pie, fish & chips, scampi and belly pork. All were excellent. One small criticism, the chips weren't the best but were OK. We didn't have room for dessert unfortunately. We had good banter with our waiter and thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Unreservedly recommended.

After reading reviews about the White Heart our experience of the evening did not match our expectations as per other reviews. We booked a table in the restaurant where we ordered the Wensleydale cheese pie and the belly pork. Regrettably the cheese pie was barely edible as the crust was very thick and solid with an overcooked appearance and seemed to have been reheated previously. Most of the pie was left on the plate and when collected by the waitress she made no comment or asked if everything was ok. The belly pork was passable but again felt that there had been some reheating as the outside was very dry. After the main course we were confronted by a waiter who stood at the end of the table and said nothing or gave any indication of what he was doing there. (I cannot say the staff were attentive at all). After discovering he wanted to take our dessert order we placed our order and I have to say the dessert just about salvaged a poor meal. From all the other reviews it may be the case that we caught them on an off day but there is no excuse in serving an visibly overcooked pie and having uncommunicative staff.

Booked for Sunday lunch having read reviws on here. The reviews didn't prepare us for the quality and overall excellence of the food. The garlic mushrooms were to die for is all I can say and the beef was Wensledayle. After the lunch we decided to eat there again on the Friday evening. If at all possible the Friday was even better, the mushrooms were as good and the Wensledayle beef as good if not better. The highlight of the evening was the lamb shank which was superb and absolutely huge so large in fact my wife couldn't finish it. I simply cannot recommend the food highly enough

We had booked a night's stay at the Green Dragon Inn in the next village but room and service were terrible so went looking for a place to stay at 10 pm. We had had a lovely meal at the White Hart and went back. We were warmly welcomed by owner Matthew and his mother, Pat. Rooms were lovely, with modern decor. Very reasonably price. Breakfast great, especially the berry compote.

We go to the white hart when we can & have always enjoyed it.

This review in no way reflects the food as it was lovely as always but the service was a bit haphazard.

We went for Sunday lunch , & ate in the dining room. At night the tables look ok with lit candles, but during the day they looked a bit empty & forlorn. Perhaps some flowers would have made the table look a bit more attractive.

Also I couldn't honestly say the table was "set" for us. Knives & forks were put out but we had to ask for spoons for veg, & it generally felt that we had to point out what was missing. Also as the tables are wooden, when extra cutlery came it was clattered down on the hard wood surface of the table.

If this was my first visit the service would have stood out for the wrong reasons & that would be such a shame, as the food is superb, but It is the not so great bits that sometimes people remember, and For some of our party it was their 1st time.

We love what Matthew and his family have done to this place,& will be back ,however, this stood out or us this visit, which was a surprise.

This was my third visit to the restaurant in 2 years, and the quality was constant. Very good choice of courses, which were well prepared and presented at reasonable prices. Staff were very attentive and helpful. Will be back again when in the area!
