We met friends and stayed for a night at this excellent hotel and restaurant. As soon as you arrive at the Star you are immediately made to feel welcome. You really do feel that someone has taken a great deal of time to consider the small things that eventually add up to a brilliant "whole". Sitting in the garden sipping our aperitifs was bliss. As was strolling around the kitchen garden watching, as a chef gathered the nights herbs and flowers, a really lovely pre dinner experience. The food was fab, succulent lamb and a
gorgeously light Eton Mess for me in fact everyone enjoyed their choices. We left the relaxed and comfortable restaurant happy and completely satisfied. It was great to see Yorkshire being celebrated so successfully in the wide and diverse selection of superb ingredients used throughout our stay. The Yorkshire breakfast was a perfect end to our stay. Plans are already in place for a return visit. Thank you to all of the lovely staff who helped to make our stay such a memorable one.

Stayed one night as a birthday treat. All was lovely including our evening meal. The only downside was the number of flies in the restaurant hovering over the food plates. I appreciate it was a warm day and The Star is situated in the country but this really put me off what was otherwise a first rate meal and stay. There must be ways to sort this issue out surely?

Excellent; than you very much. Sorry about the flies and glad you appreciate that 'it was a warm day and we are in the countryside'. If you know how to stop them, let us know! It's the same everywhere else it seems? Or are there no flies on you? Regards AP

We have visited the star for lunch once a year for a good few years now. My husband and i recently stayed for 2 nights, with my cousin from london tagging along with us. We had dinner in the restaurant both nights. The food as always was amazing. We had room 1 which was so cosy. Glad to hear ure onto fixing the shower door but no biggie for us ( hee hee)! My cousin loved his room also. We had the best time ever and will always view the Star as being very special. Thanku to all the staff - chefs, waiters/waitresses, hotel staff, cleaners and u especially big guy AP! Xxx

We had room 1 and also had dinner in the restaurant and breakfast in the morning - both of which were very good. The room cost £210 - it was a nice enough room and we enjoyed the bath at the foot of the bed, however for £210 you would not expect a shower door that would not close - the 1 inch gap at the bottom meant we had to leave towels on the floor to catch the water. Seems this has been a problem with this room for a long time after looking at some of the reviews on here.

We certainly enjoyed ourselves but would we go back? Certainly for the food...and maybe for a room after trying a few other places in the area first........

Room Tip: Room 1 shower door needs replacing.

My husband surprised me with an overnight stay and meal in the restaurant for my birthday. The Star has been on my bucket list for a long time and it did not disappoint. From the second we arrived the staff were friendly, helpful and courteous. Our room was lovely (room 4), clean and loved the little personal touches (snacks etc). The restaurant was equally fantastic. Staff friendly, courteous, food was AMAZING!! Recommend the black pudding and Foie Gras for starter. We were so full and couldn't manage a dessert but the chef added a little surprise of a slice of cake with Happy Birthday written in icing across the plate. Such a lovely, thoughtful touch. Breakfast was perfect (although I struggled to eat after the previous night's indulgence). I can only think of one thing that spoiled this experience for me..... It would have been nice if some of the guests (hotel and restaurant) could have afforded the hardworking staff the same courtesy they received. After all manners are free!

We stayed here overnight with some friends. Our room (No.6) was comfortable and well appointed and had quirky details - e.g. the sink was in the bedroom and there was a ladder in the bathroom! There was a handheld shower. The window in the bathroom allowed a view of the car park. I couldn't find a safe in the room and 2 french doors but no window meant either leaving the doors open overnight, or being stuffy. We chose stuffy. The staff were helpful but dinner was grossly "cheffy" with all dishes being overdecorated and a mixture of flavours. My meal with 1 glass of wine was £50.00 Walking back to the hotel (across the road) in the pitch black was an experience.Thank God is wasn't January! Breakfast in the beautiful Wheelhouse Room was a little limited in choice, and sitting at one table with 10 strangers may not be to everyone's taste.
All in all it was an experience, but not one we shall be repeating.

Fortunately most of our guests enjoy our 'cheffy' dishes, developed over a 25 year cooking career and food with a 'mixture of flavours'. The comment regarding a limited breakfast menu seems a little odd - Full English, kippers, smoked haddock, cheeses, smoked salmon, cured meats, fruits, yoghurts, omelettes, butties, Bucks Fizz, Black Velvet, creamed wild mushrooms... must be good in Leeds if that's limited!!! We have just returned home after having a wonderful lunch. The weather was so nice that we decided to skip the restaurant and eat outside in the beautiful garden. As it was lunchtime, we decided to miss out a starter in favour of a pudding !! We both had the halibut which tasted fresh and was accompanied by a flavoursome cauliflower purée and chicken liver parfait. Side orders of healthy vegetables and skinny fries complimented the course. We have not been for a while and having finished our lunch could not find a reason other than distance from our home as to why we have left it so long. Not the cheapest place , however you will struggle to find much better outside London.

Cheers Fussyknickers! Good to see you back. The new dish is a very 'cheffy' one (don't tell your mate from Leeds in the review above!) with veggies fdrom the kitchen garden, which couldn't be better at the moment. Don't leave it so long next time! Regards AP
