“Lovely hotel & staff. Not family friendly.”
Reviewed January 15, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here for a wedding and were impressed with the staff, service, food, and decor of this nice hotel. Our room was tastefully furnished and had plenty of space and facilities. The entrance hall and public rooms were beautifully cosy and stylish.
My only gripe is that we were made to feel - from the point of booking - that our children were not welcome. There was an additional charge of £30 per child for them to sleep on a z bed although we were informed they didn't have enough for both our children so one had to sleep on the floor. We have stayed in similar quality hotels where we have been given a large family room with additional proper beds at no extra cost, so It is a shame there are no family rooms in this hotel. Though I appreciate that families probably are not their target market (although if they are holding weddings etc then families are likely to be attending).
Rooms were pricey compared to what you can get in central Harrogate, and drinks were very expensive.
I would definitely recommend this as a place for a couple or group of adults though.

We stayed here overnight 11/1/13 with friends on a winter offer £64.50 per room inc breakfast.
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel at home. The staff are extremely friendly, especially Enzo (front of house). The hotel is so tastefully decorated, especially the lounge with comfy sofas and an inviting woodburner.
Our room was extremely clean and comfortable, the bathroom also spotless with Molton Brown products to enjoy using.
The food was outstanding (dinner and breakfast) with a good menu choice and presented very well.
We will definately return so why not try the hotel for yourselves and spread the word!

We stayed here for one night after a day of shopping in Harrogate in December. When we arrived after three we were shown to our room which was lovely with a very comfortable bed. We would have liked to have a drink but the bar wasn't open which was a shame. We ate in the restauarnt after having drinks in the lounge area which was beautifully decorated and had a lovely roaring fire. The food was really good and the service was attentive if not a little stiff. The only negative I would say is that there was no background music and the lights were too bright when eating as they weren't dimmed for the evening. The breakfast the next day was very good, I had the smoked salmon which was very fresh. Would definately go back.

I have now used this hotel quite a few times as I feel the quality and service are superb.
The rooms are comfortable, clean with some nice touches - home made biscuits and nice coffee.
In terms of quality of food in the restaurant local produce is used and the high standard of service only compliments the superb food on offer.
It is a bit more expensive but you certainly get what you pay for.
Beautiful part of the country and a place not to be missed

We had an excellent dinner here back in June so decided to stay as we attending a local party. It's a very comfortable, welcoming and stylish little hotel with ann excellent bar. The staff are charming and helpful. The room was quiet and comfortable with a good selection of teas and coffee, the bed was soft for us, but we enjoyed rolling to the middle ! Our breakfast was excellent with home made everything and perfectly cooked. We couldn't fault anything about the General Tarleton.

We were planning to travel from London to Edinburgh and we decided we would break the journey and came across this Restaurant with rooms North of Harrogate just off the A1which was about half way.

I have divided this review into two parts. Restaurant and then accommodation.

The restaurant was excellent. we had scallops then my wife had duck and I had roast grouse. The service was immaculate and the food was to die for. My wife thought it was one of the best meals we had eaten this year. The puddings looked good but unfortunately after two courses we could not manage one between us. We had coffee in the lounge which had a roaring fire and finished our wine which I have to say was very reasonable. We will definitely return to eat there again.

The accommodation was not as good. The room (4) was fine and the en-suite good but we discovered that when the occupants of the room above us got up at 6.30am we could not fail but hear them moving around and we were unable to sleep on. I have been told the owners are aware of the problem and already have plans to overcome the problem. When this is done they will have an unbeatable place to eat and stay.

The owner is also the Chef and has written several cook books. My wife bought one and commented that the receipts seemed to be designed well for use in a home.

We would throughly recommend stopping off here for a foodie break.

Room Tip: Right now take a room on the first floor not the ground floor until the renovations are done.

The rooms were very clean and the furnishings of a good quality.Home made biscuits were provided and there was a cafetiare and packets of ground coffee. The restaurant however was the jewell in the crown. The menu was was varied but not too long the food and cooking first class.

Breakfast was again of a high standard and unlike the evening meal the plates were hot.
