“Short Stay”
Reviewed October 1, 2013

After finding this place , to be honest not my first phone call , I must say that I could not have been happier . Stuck at short notice on Saturday night , I was made very welcome . I chatted to the new owners at length and found them good company . The last review said it all . Cosy ,clean & friendly , with great food & large portions. Also a nice pint of ale. I am passing again later in the year and have already ordered my room .

The Grapes Inn is about halfway between Whitby and Guisborough. It was only a 20-minute drive into Whitby so the location was very handy. The room had everything we could want for our brief stay, and the full english breakfast was excellent, with generous portions. The bar has a cosy, country feel to it, and the owner is very friendly and welcoming.
Overall, The Grapes is great value, and we would recommend it to anyone wanting a quick weekend away like us.

To start with, this is a Pub, not a five star hotel or a gourmet restaurant. And a good Pub at that, in a delightful old building overlooking Scaling Dam and the moors. The bar area has loads of atmosphere, staff are friendly, interested and helpful. I felt welcome on arrival, which was rather late after a difficult journey, and was happily served much needed drinks.
Yes, the room was small for a double but with that view from the window and the large area downstairs, how much bedroom space is needed? The bed was comfortable with cotton sheets and good pillows; the en-suite was small but perfectly adequate, clean and with plenty of hot water and lovely big bath towels. Breakfast was perfectly adequate and served to individual requirements. I was not there for a meal but it appears from the menu that plain, locally sourced food is served - a good pub menu.
Location and character is everything here - ten minutes drive from the coast and in the middle of wonderful walking country, quiet and relaxing. Not a plastic sanitised box - there are plenty of chain hotels if that is what you want. Sure there is renovation to be done, but in the meantime I would not hesitate to return when in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for the front if you want a fantastic view

If you are planning a trip to this area then forget this place. I note the excuse from earlier in the year that the owners had only recently taken over, well not a lot has changed. Its dirty, dark and coming apart at the seams. It has the feel of an unloved old boot. The front area is full of weeds. The room leading to the corridor to rooms smells badly of damp. Whilst the bed was clean, and has to be said comfortable, the room was barely big enough to swing a cat and the shower quite simply awful. Like trying to wash in drizzle. Sleep was interrupted on numerous occasions during the night due to macerator toilets being used in other rooms, yes you can hear them every time regardless of room. Also a louder motor cranked up until at fever pitch a number of times. So loud the room vibrated.
Room also full of spiders and cobwebs so don't stay here if you are Arachnophobic.

We left a homemade salad in a sealed container in the guest fridge in the corridor only to find it gone the next morning. When we quizzed the owner he claimed to have put it in his own fridge for safe keeping. He supposedly went off to retrieve it only to return 5 minutes later with an empty container saying it had been thrown out, downright bizarre!! He did reimburse 10 pounds but still very strange behavior.
At breakfast he apologised for the lack of real coffee explaining that his coffee roaster in DEVON had gone on holiday without telling him. Coffee instead was from a Nescafe mound on a plate on the bar and a pot of boiling water. Breakfast was mediocre under-cooked bacon and sausage that tasted like sandy breadcrumbs.
Given that we booked this place based to some extent on previous reviews on this site i am concerned as to the authenticity of said reviews. I travel constantly and can honestly say this is the worst places i have stayed in a long number of years. They need to call in Gordon Ramsey!!!

Room Tip: don't bother

The Inn is situated opposite Scaling Dam, a lovely expanse of water that can be walked around. The rooms were small but very clean with comfortable beds. The food was lovely and staff friendly. The decor needs updating but with a new owner at the helm, The Grapes can only move upwards.

Me and my husband stayed here for one night and really enjoyed our stay the room was clean and tidy and was good value, the meals and breakfast was 100% spot on and the staff where nothing but friendly. Stunning views over Scaling Dam and Whitby is not that far a drive away. This Pub is a traditional coaching Inn and is full of Character and charm it doesn't need much altering as i did notice on one of the feedback from someone that they had said it was dark and dingy this is rubbish this pub and restaurant is just perfect the way it is! Thank you for our lovely stay and i would definitely come back.

I was initially sceptical about staying here but I'm so glad we did, yes some of the public areas need updating but judging by the notification signs this is a work in progress. On our arrival we were met by the very friendly staff and the landlord checked us in (faster than some hotels I won't mention) whilst my husband and son got drinks at the bar (one of the best, cleanest pints in my hubby's words) I went to look at the room, the landlord said it was the best room so I was pleasantly surprised by traditional decor rather than the modern clinical feel. The family room consists of double bed, double bunk, adequate storage for clothes, ensuite shower room and tea/coffee facilities with more just down the corridor if needed. We ordered food at the bar and ate in the restaurant, i have coeliac disease so again was happy to see that this was more than catered for which meant I could have anything I wanted and have to say one of the best meals I've had in a long time. When we booked the room we asked the landlord if he could arrange transport to take us to a wedding in a remote location, he apologised that he had not been able to get a taxi as whitby regatta had booked everything out but not to worry he had organised one of his friends to take us at no cost (excellent customer service). We had our own key to get in which meant we could enjoy ourselves without time restrictions. When checking in you're asked to complete a breakfast order form before going out, we forgot but was still asked (when breakfast was closed) if we wanted to eat. The location, view over scaling dam, food, room and overall fantastic customer service will definitely keep guests returning. Thanks to Mark and the team
