Firstly we were here for a family birthday lunch - food was very nice and good service.

The room we were given on first glimpse as we entered was very nice. However on walking over the threshold we were hit with an over powering smell of stale tobacco. It permeated the whole room. The shower room and wet room was filthy with a floor that appeared totally unwashed. We were forced to sleep with the door ajar as the smell was so bed.

I tackled the manager who wouldn't look me in the eyes and clearly knew it was a problem. He immediately offered to reduce the price by £20. We felt we had to stay because we didn't want to upset the family who had organised the weekend.

I have just read the reviews on here, which include being warned against room 28, and wish I had read the reviews hbefore coming here. Plan to find out who owns the hotel and also report to tourist board. Incensed!

this hotel is very easy to find, looks lovely with all the hanging baskets and all the garden furniture outside, the room was clean but very small, comfy beds clean linen and nice white fluffy towels, the breakfast was lovely great choice. help yourself to juice and cereals and you order the rest.the staff are very nice and polite

Room Tip: an upstairs room

Great room and spa bath a bonus. Great price. Room clean and good size. Staff helpful and breakfast good. It isi actually down a side street but our room had a sea view from small balcony.
Had a great menu for evening meal but we decided to try somewhere else.

Start with the good stuff... Clean, crisp cotton bedding, big fluffy white towels, comfy beds. Very reasonable bar prices and food was good - not mind blowing but certainly a cut above your average bar food. But don't get your hopes up, all of that was out of keeping with the rest of the dire experience that is staying at the Dovedale.

Rooms smelt of wee (3 of us stayed, all confirmed their respective rooms smelt the same), service varied from helpful and friendly to abrupt and rude. Restaurant appeared to sit about 60, but with only 2 other tables of 3, we waited 45 mins for starters and another 45 mins for main course. Whole place has a tired feel and is overdue a refurb (by about 20 years). Bathrooms were grim - cracked and sharp floor tiles, rusty towel rails, sink plugs that had long since corroded away but kindly disguised by a selection of hair of unknown origin. Unusual mould growths in the shower. Couldn't wait to get home for a good wash!

The whole experience best described as "grotty".

I found this hotel to be perfectly servicable. Nothing to shout out about, but for what we paid (£109 for a family room) what we received was reasonable and I found nothing to readily complain about. The front desk staff were polite and helpful, as was the lady who served us breakfast. Breakfast was pleasant enough, although a little stingy (one of everything, except mushrooms, of which they had run out). Our room was decent, pleasant in decor and just roomy enough, but then we are a large family (kids of 11 and 14). The bathroom needed a bit of maintenance though, the shower could do with a real clean. Would we return here? Yes, I think we would.

Room Tip: The car park is around the back.
