I was lucky enough to be invited to a two day corporate event at Stapleford Park. I have to say that it is a mix of good and bad. The good points is that the course is a real challenge. I am a 7 Hcp golfer and it was tough ! A combination of deep deep rough and tricky layout kept you on your toes throughout. Greens were superb as were the bunkers. There are some very clever holes and SI 1..the par 5 11th is the hardest SI 1 I have ever played. All together as a golfing experience it was excellent.
Now the downsides...for higher handicappers it's too tough. Lads with us went through dozens of balls. Some of the green to tee walks are immense and some of the signage could be improved else the walks just get longer !! The traditional 9 out 9 back layout is lovely BUT no halfway house, no loos on the course, no refreshments of any kind...come on guys we expect better than this.
There is no pro shop so don't expect to come along and arm yourself with a stack of logo'd gear or a new wedge because you're bang out of luck.
The staff were friendly and a little apologetic for the lack of facilities. They even took on my suggestion and drove out a buggy to the 10th tee with refreshments...the comment 'I don't know why we haven't done this before' summed it all up though !
Would I go back...you bet I would. Would I rush back.....probably not !
