“Ladies that lunch”
Reviewed August 12, 2012 via mobile

Have had Sunday lunch here but more recently called in with a friend for mid week lunch. Good friendly staff (2 young ladies) and a delicious meal that was just the right portion size. Well worth a visit and we will return soon.

Having had our wedding here in July 2012, I felt compelled to write a review as the experience was definately worth shouting about.

My wife and I had booked the whole hotel for the weekend for all our guests and ourselves and we were treated like royalty from the moment we arrived. The groomsmen spent the 1st night here, dining in the restaurant followed by a private breakfast in the morning. The second night all the hotel guests had changed, but the staff had turned round the rooms perfectly before we returned.

The meal the night before was nothing short of exceptional, with all our guests commenting on the quality of The Royal Oak's local produce menu. Breakfast was equally impressive with a large selection of croissants, fruit, cereals followed by the perfect fry-up to last us all through the service until we returned later that day.

Upon our return from the church with the rest of the guests, we were met with a Champagne reception and canapes prior to setting down in the marquee for the wedding breakfast. The canapes, (which we selected prior to the day) are still being talked about today by our wedding guests and that was before we sat down to eat the our bespoke menu.

There is a misconception that when caterers cook for a wedding of 100+ people they can't produce restaurant quality, well not in this case. The wedding breakfast served was nothing short of fine-dining quality, with the presentation you would expect from a Michelin star restaurant. In fact, the quality of the food was pretty much the main topic of discussion throughout the night.

We were appointed our own wedding planner for the day who made sure everything was faultless, not least the delivery of the food to each table with all guests getting their plates at exactly the same time. Everything about the venue, the lighting, the layout, the view over the fields, the food, the service, the friendly staff and the attention to detail really blew us away. The marquee looked amazing, especially at night when the lighting completely changed the venue into the perfect evening reception.

The only fault with this wedding was the fact it had to end, which when it did, the bridal party were only 30 seconds from falling into the comfiest beds you could wish to sleep in. Even for the rest of the guests who weren't staying, car parking was provided in a nearby school and taxi's were provided by the management for nearby Loughborough/Hathern hotels.

The morning after the wedding the bridal party (14 of us) were served a private breakfast in the restaurant, which enabled us to all spend the morning together before we departed. The final touch to a perfect weekend.

I don't know who writes bad reviews about this place, (maybe a disgruntled competitor) but trust us when we say it is perfect. We have visited many times over the last year in the build up to our wedding and have experienced nothing but a 5 star, personal service. Many thanks to all the staff at The Royal Oak for making our day truly amazing, we will return again and again.

Room Tip: Try and get the room with a jacuzzi bath - Icing on the cake.

The Royal Oak is very convenient to Donnington Park, which is why we selected it for a one-night stay earlier this month. Our welcome was pleasant and although we were early, were shown to our room without question. I have a problem with places designating themselves 'gastro-pubs', isn't that for their customers to determine? (I'd use the word diners, but they manage to mis-punctuate it in the same sentence they award themselves gastro-pub laurels on their website.)
We were totally unable to connect to the wifi, my husband walked around carrying the computer to the room nearest where we were told it was and could get only such a weak signal that he couldn't use it. We'd blame the computer, but the wifi at the hotel the next night was completely accessible. Happily we'd brought our own mifi equipment and used it.
The pub carried Sharps Doom Bar, a long way from Cornwall, but lovely, and in Doom Bar glasses at that! Our meals were good, but I shouldn't have fallen for the trio of pork, pigeon and rabbit, entirely too much food but that was my bad. The fish pie my husband chose was fine. The wine selection was okay.
The room was for the most part very adequate, but the bathroom may have pushed 'stylish' a decade too far. A square toilet has, well, corners. The shower was its own worst enemy; kind of a walk-in enclosure, but not enough 'enclosure.' The staff showing us about warned that occasionally the shower pan could overfill, running water out onto the floor of the bathroom. But that's not the problem. The shower head simply shoots water out past the little glass panel presumably intended to contain it and forms a river across the floor. No anti-skid on the floor of the shower, no grab bar of any kind, and worse, no shelf for shampoo, soap, etc., we had to pick it off the floor and replace it after use. Toiletries were provided.
Breakfast was a delight, breads, croissants, cereals, fruit in great abundance available, and hot dishes prepared to order. I had the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and got enough to feed a table of four. All this and a huge glass of juice, and decaf coffee, and we believe it likely we were the only guests overnight.
So ups and downs, but overall not a bad stay. Hope they get the wifi in order in the rooms. Hope they keep the Doom Bar on pump for our next visit back.

Room Tip: If you're planning to use the pub's wifi, ask for room 4 or 5, that's where they say it...

We'd heard good things about this restaurant and the menu looked great but we were very disappointed with our food when it came. I had the lamb and while the veg was great the lamb had been char grilled and that was all you could taste, my partners steak was the same. My dessert did not have everything it said and the rice pudding part taste like the whole cinnamon pot had been tipped in, it was inedible. We felt like this place had great potential, but needed a chef who knew how to balance flavours better. Definitely wouldn't return. A shame as the pub itself is lovely.

Clean large modern room, Comfortable bed and good powerful shower. We stayed overnight to attend an event at Donnington park which is very close by. We enjoyed a very good evening meal. I would advise booking as very popular and breakfast the following day was lovely local products and rather large. i couldn't finish it! All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Would recommend.

This is a review for the restaurant and not the hotel... We regularly pop in for lunch, and have probably eaten here 6 or 7 times now. The food and service are always fantastic. The menu is extensive and not only does the food look amazing it tastes even better. The only complain I have is that the restaurant is quite small and often full - so make sure you book in advance!
