“Great food, worth a try”
Reviewed June 22, 2011

We decided to try this venue for only the second time in 9 years for a change, nearly didnt after reading the reviews but glad we did.
The restaurant and hotel are not boutique but this is Ashby, a market town in Leicestershire so what do you expect ?
Good menu and quality of food excellent, prices fair for the quality. One issue with dessert but having pointed it out, not charged and rightly so, nice not to have to argue the fact though.
I would suggest it is worth giving this place a go, we had a great night, service was very good and happy staff member made it feel more special

“the worst meal I have ever had”
Reviewed October 12, 2010

We visited the fallen knight hotel in ashby de la zouch, on 09/10/10, and first visited the
shabby bar, with its torn chair coverings and its poorly stocked bar. The restaurant was
freezing cold, and the food was completely tasteless, and the worst we had ever tasted, we were served very quickly as I think the waitress wanted to get home, there were only six of us in the restaurant, which speaks for itself really

“In desparate need of refurbishment. Food could be better.”
Reviewed August 21, 2009

We were shown into hotel's bar area for drinks while we waited for the restaurant menu to be brought to us. The fabric covering the chairs was badly ripped and very well worn, and the chairbacks, where countless people had rested their heads, were richly shiny with grime. All the fabric covered chairs were in great need of new upholstory, or preferably of replacement as they certainly weren't comfortable to sit on. The wall covering was badly chipped and scuffed and in need of replacement. The dark-wood bar made the already dull room even darker. The overall effect was of gloom, of somewhere that had seen better days. The bar was in desperate need of refurbishment.
The restaurant was quite a contrast: bright and airy, with white linen covered tables, cheerful candles, a small vase of flowers, crisp linen napkins and good cutlery. But the music was awful. Loud Rat-Pack songs played at high volume, giving the atmosphere of a fast-food outlet, not a quality restaurant where you'd want to linger for a leisurely meal. It certainly worked with us - we managed to eat two courses within 30 minutes!! The poor waitress sympathised with us over this, but said the staff weren't allowed to change the music and they had to listen to it all day long! So, to the food. What was billed as home-made pate came thinly sliced and looked pre-packaged. It was tasty but unexceptional. Our main courses were of a chicken breast stuffed with mozerella cheese and wrapped in pancetta. It was served on a pleasant sauce and came with vegetables, one of which was "roast" potatoes: potatoes that appeared to have been boiled and then deep fat fried in fat that had a decidedly rancid taste. The chicken and sauce were pleasant and the carrot batons and brocolli were cooked well. However, the overall effect of the whole eating out experience was one of disappointment: grubby and torn bar furniture, over loud and inappropriate music, and food that should have been much better in this 3-star hotel. We won't be rushing back.

“Surly Management”
Reviewed September 27, 2008

Sadly, a lovely meal was ruined by being hurried out of the restaurant by a maitre d' obviously keen to get home! Won't be going again.
