“How Rude!”
Reviewed November 23, 2010

We recently lost a very dear friend and their funeral was held at the Royal Hotel. The receptionist was very polite and so were the ladies (or girls) organising the food. The downside was one very rude elderly man, who, we discovered after making enquiries was the assistant manager 'John'. This was a solem event made worst by a' littler Hitler' who seemed to enjoy bullying the younger staff, his manner was rude, abrupt and totally un-called for.

Stayed for two nights. Plus points: impressive facade; certainy handy for town and relatively quiet; breakfast and breakfast service excellent; bar area plush with selection of large/ widescreen tvs. Minus points; rooms very outdated ( peeling wallpaper, yellowing valance, thick layer of dust on carpet directly underneath edge of bed, skirting that hasnt seen a lick of paint in years ); minute tv in room with v limited choice of channels ( some of which - eg bbc 1 - werent even correctly tuned ); wi fi connectivity only available in close proximity to the reception area ( not in rooms ); shower ran at a triclkle; and had to wait two minutes for hot water tap to run hot. Got the impression that refurbishment efforts mentioned elsewhere had focussed more on communal areas than guest rooms themselves as stepping into mine felt like stepping back in time!

We stayed here for one night. The foyer was pleasant and the receptionist was efficient and helpful. Our room was large but the decor was somewhat dated. You really needed the lights on as it was quite a dark room. The bed linen was clean and the bed most comfortable. The bathroom(which we think had been refurbished) was excellent. As others have mentioned, there is no lift. so older people would have a problem with this. There was a wedding party whilst we were there but we didnt find any problem with noise at all.The dining room had been refurbished and was really very nicely decorated. The breakfast was excellent as were the waiting staff.

This was my first time in England in 30 years, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The exterior of the hotel is designed well, and is inviting. Lobby is well lit and the staff at the front desk are very accommodating. There is no elevator, so if you have trouble climbing stairs, this is not the place for you. My room is small, but set up very well. Could use some updating with the wall paper (peeling in some areas), but is overall clean. Bathroom has some storage space for your toiletries, which isn't always the case at some of these types of smaller hotels. Nice thing is that there is an iron & board in the room, as well as pants press.
Bar/Pub is nice place to have a pint, wouldn't call it the social center of Ashby, but great to grab a quick one before walking into town or coming back. I had a B&B package, so breakfast was included. It's fine, but not terrific. Set up as a buffet. Dining room has some large windows over looking a garden, and sometimes they will open a door to let the air move around, which was nice.
The Hotel is very close to town center, and very walkable. Nice little town with a few decent restaurants & pubs.

Recently stayed at this hotel and after reading the reviews was pleasantly surprised. All the rooms downstairs have been refurbished - luxurious fixtures and fittings. Bar very cosy. Bedrooms are in the process of being refurbished. We had a refurbished double. Very spacious. New decor but furniture still quite old but that added to the ambience. Breakfast was superb. Everything in a full english you could possibly want which was served in a buffet style. You could order your eggs separately and have them cooked anyway you liked. There were also other options on a menu if the bacon, sausage, hash browns, tomatoes, baked beans, mushrooms, scrambled eggs, fruit juices, cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit were not to your liking!!!!!! Couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Stayed in this hotel twice for family gatherings in the town twice this month and each time was worse than the last.

Yes its on the road which is Ok - on entering you are met by loud disco music playing in reception which seems to be playing to keep the staff occupied as the receptionist sung along all through our check in and it was difficult to hear what she was saying. Nit like a bad 70's disco.

Rooms are ok but very dated - loved the bit of masking tape holding our bedroom carpet together. Rooms either boiling hot or freezing (one member of our party had to move rooms as heating could not be turned down)

^ of us met for drinks in the bar in the evening and the tv was on and as we were the only people in the bar we asked if the staff could turn the tv down. This neber happened - it appeared they were watching the X factor and nothing was going to disturb them - we had one drink and left - so they lost revenue from 6 people.

Breakfast was shambolic to say the least even thoughthere were only two table occupied - again we seemed to be in the way as guests.

Checking out was shocking - listerning the the loud music again we had to ring the reception bell 4 times and knock on a door marked private to get any attention and when some one finally came they were rude. We waited for the rest of our party in the reception area and the staff we laughing and joking about a member of staff being off ill and the receptionist chatted on the phone to what appeared to be a friend and made no attempt to tone down her conversation.

NEVER AGAIN - this hotel is all that is wrong with UK provincial hotels - Ruth Watson the hotel inspector would have a field day here.
