Owner description: A visit to Ashby Castle makes a great family day out in Leicestershire. The property began as a manor house in the 12th century and reached castle status in the 15th century. Come and find out about the castle’s colourful history with our lively audio tour. Hear how Edward IV’s Chamberlain Lord Hastings added the chapel and the impressive keep-like Hastings Tower – a castle within a castle. Visitors can still climb the tower today despite it suffering massive damage during the Civil War. There are great views from the top! Then make sure you discover the underground passage from the kitchen to the tower, probably created during this war, which can still be explored today. Don't Miss •Walk the underground passage between the tower and the kitchen •Be amazed that you can still climb to the top of the half ruined tower •Find out more about the castle's dramatic history in the company of our amusing audio guide Last admission is half an hour before closing.

Altho I am not a fan of ruins, I have to say this was a great day out, from the moment we went in, we were welcomed by the staff which were very polite, they gave us a small detailed book of what this castle was about so we knew where to go.

It was sunny so it was a good way to spend time, the place looked great apart from a few bird poo which I didn't mind but the was thing which weren't too great was the amount of litter, now I know its not their faults because I saw a couple of teens messing about since they climbed the small wall, maybe they were skipping lessons but they were throwing rubish which I wasn't very impressed but anyway, if its sunny, I would go again good place

The castle is a ruin but an impressive one. The view from the top of the tower gives you a real sense on the scale of the castle. The underground passage is fun for the kids.

This casle is very accessible from the centre of the market town of Ashby. On approaching, it looks like it's going to be just ruins, but there's quite a lot still standing and the information boards are very informative. In addition to these, we were given audio equipment to play a soundtrack as we walked round. This was refreshingly silly and had touches of Black Adder about it, whilst explaining the history along the way.

It seemed that the money was spent on the up-keep of the castle, as the entrance / gift shop / loos were all contained within a relatively small shed.

A visit to the casle should be followed by a pub lunch, and the main street has a choice of pubs and cafes. Actually, in the end we chose the Thai Restaurant and we were well looked after in there.

The Audio brings the castle ruins to life. Not a great deal to see and I would guess that young children would get easily bored but if you are interested in history it's fascinating. As its near the centre of Ashby you can easily walk around the town as an add on.
