stayed here ahead of booking our wedding.
When i asked to see the wedding coordinator (sonia) I was told she was not available as she was on a call. Me and my husband then waited a further twenty five minutes without seeing her after which time we went and booked our wedding with another hotel. In short we were appalled by the ignorance in this hotel and if this is anything to go by we cannot recommend it to anyone.

Well i was totally apprehensive about staying here after reading the reviews as you can imagine. However as i have said above don't always believe what you read as i was really surprised with the outcome. Upon arrival we booked into the hotel no problem. We had booked online and finding our reservation was a breeze. Booking in took less than 2 minutes. The staff on the desk where polite and helpful and told us exactly where our room was situated.
Going into the room i really didn't know what to expect. However upon entering i was pleasantly surprised. Although basic, bed, tv, dressing table, wardrobe and bathroom it was clean and tidy. I did check for dust but found none. The room was decorated in cream with white bedding making the room bright and seemed airy.
We left our luggage and went to the bar area to get a drink. Again came across a very polite member of staff who couldn't do enough to help. Served us our drinks and we sat down. The bar area at this time was empty however tv was on and also had pool table and dart board for use. The drinks where very inexpensive for a hotel which was great :)
I had a lovely sleep in the bed and no springs sticking into me or my partner.
I can say i enjoyed my stay and for the price it is great value for money. Yes i agree that the hotel it's self is a bit tired and could do with a lick of paint, however in these credit crunch times i would suggest that The Brittania is good value for money and would recommend to family and friends.
Lastly in the room was a card from maintenance, the card suggest that although they do maintain the hotel and see to all repairs as it is so big at times things can be overlooked, the card is for you the customer to fill in if you feel there is something that needs to be brought to their attention which i felt was a good idea.

my wife and i along with a friend stayed at the britannia for four nights on a caledonian bus tour.we visited liverpool.chester and the lakes, using the hotel as a base for the duration of the tour.on arrival at the hotel check-in was quick and easy.our rooms were very spacious, decent size bathtoom, enough storage space for our luggage ,room decor quite fresh, comfortable beds & 9 channels on tv .started to wonder if this was rhe same hotel other people had reviewed so badly.well, things went downhill when we went to dinner.there were several coach parties arrived same day,and were allocated different meal times from 6.00pm until8.00pm.we were given the last dinner at 8.00pm.went to dining room at allocated time, sat down at our allocated tables, and waited ,and waited ,and waited.the restaurant staff were still giving out dessert to the 7.00pm sitting, and completely ignored us .after we complained ,we were eventually served our starter at 8.35.<tepid mushroom soup,no alternative was offerred>we were then told to go to the buffet for our main course, there was no carvery ,which was a choice on the earlier meal times.all that was left was cornish pasties, a few pork chops ,and meatballs in a congealed gravy .we complained and were more or less told ,that was all that was left and had to take it or leave it.the coach driver complained to management about our treatment and things improved for the rest of our stay.no complaints about the choice of meals for remainder of stay, but the staff in the restaurant are all young people ,pleasant enough, probably on minimum wage, but don,t seem to know what their duties are.there doesn,t seem to be anyone supervising them, and at busy times they find it difficult to cope with large nunbers of diners..consequently,queues build up at the buffet, food is not replenished promptly, dinner plates run out, tables are not cleared as quickly as they should be.same at breakfast time, not a bad choice, all buffet- cereals, small selection of fruit<tinned>full english, although you have to ask for fried eggs if you want them, again, food runs out,and you have to wait ages for the dishes to be refilled, queues rapidly build up,again there doesn,t seem to be anyone in charge of the staff.bar area -not enough seats for amount of guests, the bar itself is rather small with basic choice of drinks.complimentary tea & coffee laid out on a table after dinner for guests to help themselvesto.brewers fare type pub across the road from hotel, and two village pubs couple of minutes walk to the left of hotel.apart from them ,hotel has small pool and gym but it costs £1.50 to use .nothing to do in emmediate area of hotel.would we return to hotel?no ,it,s ok for coach parties or a one night stopover.

I was supposed to stay at this hotel for 7 nights checked out after first night..... The whole hotel is filthy! Bath had hairs and congealed shampoo in it... Toilet was absolutely disgusting and wash basin had scum all over it. The tiles on wall next to toilet looked as if they had never been cleaned. The mugs left in room for tea and coffee still had lipstick stains from previous guests. Marks all over wall in room and curtains not attached to curtain pole. Cobwebs everywhere and even toe nail clippings on bedroom floor. I even found a used cotton bud at side of bed.

I complained in reception and was given the choice of another room, after inspection of that room (it was just as bad) I decided to check out.

I showed the Housekeeping Manager the room and she was not in the least bit concerned.

The bar area and reception is very shabby and seating very dirty. The taxi driver who took me to another hotel even said that the Brittania is disgusted and he tells everyone not to stay.

This Hotel only seems interested in suppling cheap drink to unruly teenagers!

Do not stay there.

About the only good thing I can say about this hotel is that it has potential - it's quite spacious, with a nice atrium-style lobby, swimming pool, large rooms etc.

However, it would appear to be appallingly managed and neglected.

I've never been in a hotel room that was so visible dirty - large accumulations of dust in corners, dirt in drawers, crockery unclean. The bed was horribly uncomfortable, I could feel each spring. Bedding was old and threadbare. Marks on the walls (including footprints?!).

Swimming pool was closed during hours it was advertised as being open - besides which there was charge for entry.

Around the hotel there were empty glasses and crockery just lying about on the floor, looking like they'd been there for days. Walls were sticky where drinks had been spilled and not cleaned up.

Breakfast consisted of very little and looked like the cheapest ingredients badly cooked.

Staff were friendly but disinterested in the job and not very good at it. I'm guessing they were probably poorly trained and badly paid.

It looks like this hotel makes it's money by bringing cheap coach parties and cutting as many corners as it can on cleaning, maintainance and staff.

In summary the most unpleasant hotel I've ever stayed in

I feel compelled to give a review, after staying in this hotel as we travelled with Newmarket coach tours, from the moment we arrived, i was disgraced that the hotel was in operation. The carpark and entrance to the hotel were disgusting, weeds were overgrown, and cars were just dumped, not correctly parked in bays? never seen a sweepting bush for years. The coach went around to the back to try and turn, and we could see lots of youngsters ( which we belived were workers in the hotel ) sitting around a table outside, taking a break. There were loads of containers around the back, and no sign of life. Certainly not somewhere you want to be parking you car overnight, let alone through the day! Youngsters, were loitering on the corner also, which did not give a good impression. The general look of the hotel was drab and very unwelcoming.
On check-in, our room passes had been placed in envelopes and just needed to be collected from the desk, which didnt take long. On arrival into our room, the smell of stale smoke hit you as soon as you opened the door, disgusting. As we walked in, the curtains were handing off the rail, the valance was all over the place on the bed, the dust on the skirting boards was an inch thick, and the duvets and bedding were ripped, they did 'look clean' but by the cleanliness of the rest of the room, i was worried. I went down to reception after pulling out my printed copy of what was advertised on the internet, and it describing every room tastefully decorated in cream, blue and green, these were definately not the rooms i had looked at on the internet web page for the hotel, very misleading, and against trades decription act! the receptionist was new - i was told- and said the system had crashed, so took her a while to find us new rooms. We were a party of four, and the other room was just as disgusting. After about 20 mins she gave me another two pass keys, so i went up to check the rooms, they were much cleaner, so we changed over to them, the beds though very uncomfortable. So whether the rooms had been modernised, but beds or materesses not replaced im not sure, but there was a soap bar stuck to the inside of the bath from the previous guests. The cleaners did not seem to have any passion about their work. No supervisors to check their work surely.
Dinner was booked for 7:30, so we went down a little early, as the coach tour rep had said that their were two coaches in, so '100 people to dine at once, would be good to see!' she said! the meal took until 9:30pm, and was very basic, i wont bore you with all the details. the reception and bar staff were untidily dressed, the bar man, walked across the reception on his way for a fag break with a fag in his mouth ready to light, the receptionist wore black combats and the waiter had a mohigan! very classy, but it did fit in with the hotel i guess. Breakfast the following morning was horrible, everything swimming in grease. Avoid with all costs, i wouldnt let my pet dogs stay there.
If the rest of the Britannia hotels are like this, dont know how they are still in business...
