“Do not go here!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2008

The manager/chef tried to dish up beef and pretend it was lamb! my partner, a butcher, knew it was beef straight away but the manager got very aggressive and shouted at us when we questioned it.
the bread was frozen solid, the wine was warm instead of chilled and took half an hour to get to us. we still had to pay £80 for an absolutely horrendous meal after such an angry and aggressive confrontation with the manager that we decided it would be safer and easier just to agree to pay part of the bill. he made me feel incredibly uncomfortable for the rest of the stay - so much so that when i scalded myself on the shower (because there was no where to hang the shower, you had to hold it and the shower handle was broken), i didn't feel able to go and talk to him about it...
the bath was also cracked in several places, the room apparently had just been redecorated but it was so poorly done it looks incredibly shabby. the room was freezing and i didn't manage to sleep at all.

overall an utterly depressing stay.

On your website there were mixed reviews, but more good than bad, so we booked.
Room was clean, bed comfortable, but squeaky(just turning over!!) Decoration and furniture rather tired.
Having worked all day until 6pm and then driven for an hour to get there, we were ready for a drink and nice meal.
Food was a big disappointment. Both meals were with crusty bread, which was a small soft white roll! Ploughmans at £7.50 was a miniature pork pie(I think they are 4 for a £1 at Morrisons)
3 slices of "plastic" ham, full of water and tasteless.Mixed pickles, a spoon of picalilli. The cheese was good.A few green leaves, half a tomato, 2 strips of pepper and 4 slices of cucumber. When I complained I was told "they had been very busy due to local show and had to get what was left at the Supermarket".No price adjustment offered.
Back to the bedroom and the TV didnt work, no signal vailable I was told.
Breakfast was very good, but not somewhere I would recommend or return to.All staff very pleasant.

I took my husband to the new Brasserie at the Crofters for what I have to describe as the best meal ever. The steak was to die for and the brulee light and delicious. I treated him to a nights stay and glad I did. The bedroom had obviously been refurbished and had the most gorgeous headboard. The room was clean, dark and quiet - what more can you ask? I thought it was good value for money (£75 for a double room) and have booked again for New Year.

Our bouble room cost £75, so it is no longer quite as cheap as some other reviewers suggest. When we entered the hotel the two receptionists were eating a knife and fork lunch at the reception desk. Workmen were working in the bar/reception area. Our room had approximately two feet of mould in the tiling above the bath as had the shower curtain. I complained and was moved to another room . We arrived back about 11 that night to be greeted by a loud extractor noise. I complained again, the manager knew what the problem was and switched off the fan. The fire escape next to our room was blocked by cartons and builders tools amd materials. When I asked for the manager on check out and complained that the service did not match the price of the room his view was that he had solved both our problems and that there was therefore no problem. Need I comment more?

Decided to look for an independent hotel instead of the usual Travelodge or equivelent chain hotel.

The positves of doing this are you may find a really nice hotel, the negatives being you might pick a grim one.

Thankfully this hotel tended more to the first option rather than the later.

The positives - Friendly staff, a Good quality room, a Bar which served good food, without having to walk to a pub or end up stuck with Little Chef / Mcdonalds.

The negatives being - the worn and past its best circulation areas, the lack of a shower enclosure (although the bath had a shower attachment its not quite the same with no fixed shower or shower curtain, not quite as convenient as a motorway hotel.

My conclusion is if you cant get a cheap rate (less than £40) at a Motorway hotel its worth looking at the smaller scale chain or independent hotels, which might have a bit more 'character' about them, at a slight premium - just so long as you use Tripadvisor to provide a bit of research before booking.

My room was £55 including breakfast which made it worhwhile looking beyond the usual motorway hotels and in this occasion i was pleased i did.

It gets a 3 star in comparison to hotels, but probably warrants a 4 star if comparing to Pubs with accommodation.

  • Liked — Individuality of the Hotel
  • Disliked — Tired appearance in the Corridors, Rubbish on the Roof

We stayed here on 27th & 28th October 2006; arrived Friday, left Sunday. The room was clean, large and well equipped (with 1double and 1 single bed) and had a large corner bath with shower over. The staff were helpful, efficient and friendly. Some friends of ours also stayed at the same time; their room was in a different part of the hotel and slightly smaller with one double bed, but tastefully (and recently) decorated, though it lacked a shower over the bath.

The hotel has two places to eat: the Tavern Bar and the Restaurant, though this was closed when we were ther due to being booked for a function. Nonetheless, the Tavern Bar suited our needs well and served a good range of Pub Food at pub prices; it also had a selection of Real Ales. A full english breakfast was served in the restaurant at the inclusive rate.

Whilst there we visited Carnforth station which was the location for Brief Encounter and now has a visitors centre following this theme. Garstang might seem to be in the middle of nowhere, but is actually well placed for the Lakes, Blackpool and the less-visited County town, Lancaster - do not miss the Castle Tour (part of the castle is actually a working prison !) which includes the courts and old cells; it provides an amazing insight into the legal processes of earlier centuries !

All in all, we had an excellent stay. Whilst the Crofters is not at the top of the market, neither is the room rate - far from it ! ...and we considered it excellent value and would recommend it to anyone looking for good value, comfortable accommodation in the area.

A 50-something couple from Yorkshire.
