“Beautiful setting”
Reviewed June 12, 2012

Stayed at this hotel for one night, Mon 11th June. Room and bathroom quite small but very clean and fantastic view of the beautiful gardens. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Evening meal was out of this world, simply fantastic. However breakfast was very average and a disappointment after the meal of the previous evening. Sausages in particular were horrid. (Go to a local butcher and get some homemade ones.) The bedroom was a bit on the chilly side. Overall a pleasant stay in an elegant property in this very peaceful and relaxing setting.

We stayed for 1 night in a double room at the Astley Bank Hotel on the 9th June 2012 and it was so good, we wondered if it was possible to move in.
Set in beautiful grounds, this hotel was excellent. The room we had was very well furnished, clean and confortable with a stylish feel to it. The bathroom was also stunning, with a huge corner bath and seperate twin shower cubicle, and mirrors everywhere. Both the bedroom and bathroom were flooded with natural light as the windows were huge.
The breakfast was excellent, and had everything you could want from cereal to a full english
What set this place apart from other hotels was the level of service from the staff. It was faultless. The receptionist called a taxi for us and was told that it would be 5 minutes. When the taxi was a few minutes late she noticed and, without any prompting, called the taxi company again to enquire to its whereabouts. That doesn't happen at most hotels. Furthermore, when we arrived home in the early hours, the night porter greeted us at the door and already had our room key in his hand ready for us. The staff made us feel like we were the only guests as they couldnt do enough for you.
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone, especially to those who would like an alternative to the Travelodge's or Premier Inn's that seem to be ubiquitous these days (other boring hotels are available).
The Astley Bank Hotel has character that you wont find in most other places and is a real gem. Book in and see for yourself.

Room Tip: Room 31 was a corner room and had 2 huge windows and a good sized (and well placed) window in the ba...

We stayed for 3 nights at the Astley bank hotel, Darwen (between Bolton and Blackburn). The hotel is quite isolated on the way out of the small city.
The external aspect of the hotel is actually very nice. It is a mansion type of building located in a beautiful park. Unfortunately, this is pretty it for the good points.
Rooms: The rooms are tiny, and bathrooms even smaller than that! Bed was too soft for our taste but it was ok for a short stay. The rooms are very tired: furniture is tired with marks and scratches on it. You won't find any place to store your clothes unless you use the tiny wardrobe just behind the room door containing 2 hangers if you are lucky (we were not as we had only 1!). We saw a few traces of molding in our room and also on the building. The hotel is quite humid. To be frank this hotel would need a complete renovation and change of furniture.
Food: We had English breakfast every morning as it was included with our room... eggs never came the way we ordered them (got boiled egg instead of scrambled or scrambled instead of poached...), sausage was overcooked and dry and the all breakfast experience was very heavy and oily. We were served cold toasts too... so, breakfast was not really good.
Service: Service is really below average and it has an ambiance of a "Fawlty Tower" episode with crazy hair waitresses (apparently the fashion hairstyle right now in this part of England is "Patsy's" look from "Absolutely fabulous") and very relaxed service... Got my plate almost landing on my knees and the waitress with her chewing gum looked at me saying "oh sorry" and just turned off!
The less funny of all this is the bill you get when you check-out, because for that price you can stay in a much nicer hotel in the region... so my advise is: stay somewhere else! Really poor value for money.

Room Tip: The only bigger rooms you will find are located in the main building (on 1st floor), but then again...

As we left Bolton and drove over the moors approaching the once prosperous mill town of Darwen we found a real gem of a hotel and had a most delightful stay at Astley Bank Hotel. Approached through lovely grounds this early 1800s mansion has been converted to a most elegant hotel. The public rooms were beautifully furnished including wonderful drapes and they lead to the spacious, bright dining room overlooking the gardens. Dinner was truly excellent and far above expectation with a comprehensive menu, each dish being carefully chosen and really well cooked and presented. The wine list was also impressive and included good quality half bottles. Our bedroom No 31 was beautifully furnished and overlooked the gardens - the bathroom was fantastic and with Egyptian tiles inset with gold felt very up market.
We left the following morning feeling that we had been well looked after and just before departure enjoyed a really huge Lancashire breakfast giving us a great sense of satisfaction. We will certainly return.

Room Tip: Room 31 was lovely - overlooked gardens with dual aspect window

My wife & I have stayed several times (1, 2 or 3 nights) over the past 18months. Excellent executive bedroom accomodation, very comfortable & well appointed.Meals at breakfast & dinner of high quality and wide menu choice in dining room/conservatory with garden view.Lounge has comfortable chairs & is tastefully furnished.Great location for pre-dinner drinks since bar area is resticted. All staff and management are friendly & provide attentive service. The hotel is maintained to high standard inside & the gardens are a lovely setting around the hotel.Overall this hotel rates a high score!

Room Tip: Executive rooms are quiet with garden views & large bathroom.
