We celebrated our golden wedding on january 11th 2014 at Whalley Abbey. Every thing was absolutely fantastic. From the first day we went to book, the staff were so helpful and friendly.
Nothing was too much trouble.Any queries we had were easily sorted out.Onthe night everything
went like clockwork. The service was unbeatable and the food was excellent. It really couldn't be
bettered.Breakfast the morning after was delicious and plentyful. We would definitely recommend Whalley Abbey.A beautiful tranquil place to relax and enjoy. Well worth a visit.

Room Tip: The bridal suite is the best room.

We stayed in this very special b&b while visiting Whalley and loved it. Lovely friendly reception, pretty well-equipped room. Guesthouse is set in the quite grounds of ruined Whalley Abbey. Tranquil & atmospheric but right in the centre of the village. Good breakfast in old refectory. We'll return!

The Abbey ruins at Whalley belong to the local diocese and a walk round the grounds costs only £2 per adult; this is well worth it as a surprising amount of this Cistercian Abbey is still standing.

You're given a simple guide to the ruins when you pay, which is adequate for interpretation of the site - a guide book is also available.

The gardens are well-tended and pleasant in themselves to walk around, but there's lots of the Abbey to see. The lay brothers' dorter is intact, and there are substantial remains of the parlour and chapter rooms. Some original tiling is present, but isn't in a great state of repair. The Abbot's house retains some interesting detail, as does the private chapel.

Of particular interest are the chambers beneath the choir stalls, put there to amplify the monks' voices - apparently quite a common practice, but not often on view.

It's not the most photogenic site I have visited, as much of the ruins have been levelled off to a similar height - but there are some good 'arches through arches' shots to be had, and steps at the perimeter provide a panoramic and elevated view.

The visitor centre has a scale model recreating what the Abbey would originally have looked like, as well as panels showing its history and a couple of artefacts.

There's a café, but this has very much the ambience of a hotel breakfast room (as it I believe it in fact is) - it didn't seem a very cosy place for lunch, so we didn't try it.

There's a car park within the Abbey grounds as well as parking in the vicinity. When we arrived, we weren't quite sure where to pay - after mistakenly going towards the hotel reception, we found the friendly woman in the café who took our entrance fees. There are loos in the café plus a handful of souvenirs and items of religious interest. No dogs (except assistance dogs) are allowed.

Note that the Abbey gatehouse owned by English Heritage is outside the borders of this site.

Worth popping in - would recommend a summer visit to get the most out of the gardens, but the ruins are worth seeing anytime,

We spent three nights in The Abbey and enjoyed the experience very much. The room and bath were large and well appointed. It was extremely quiet and the grounds were superb. We spent one morning exploring and taking photos of extraordinary ruins and gardens.

Although I only live 25 miles away I paid my first visit to the Abbey ruins a couple of weeks ago. Why did I wait so long? The site has a beautiful location by the river and the gardens were full of colour as it was summer. We wandered through the ruins following the map and guide and were impressed that there were so many benches to allow us to stop and contemplate the scenery. Unfortunately we didn't have time to see the museum or visit the cafe but I will certainly be returning. Close by is the church of St. Mary and All Saints which is also worth a visit. There has been a church on the site since Anglo Saxon times and the present church dates from early 13th century. Most days from 2 pm the church is open and there is someone there to give you all the information you need. It is a very tranquil and welcoming church with some interesting features.

I have lunched at the Whalley Abbey coffee shop a few times with a friend who is quite keen on the location - I haven't always been totally satisfied with my food but haven't liked to complain. However, having found soil in my salad yet again today I felt obliged to say something - unfortunately our waitress wasn't that concerned, said she'd speak to the chef who said it had been washed: and that was the end of it. We won't be going back in a hurry.

Visited the old Abbey ruins with friends. What beautiful gardens! Nice small museum area with a bit of history of the Abbey. Wonderful place to take photographs! Toured the church and churchyard. Friendly staff.
