Mercure Blackburn Dunkenhalgh Hotel & Spa
Reviewed April 13, 2013 via mobile

We had a spa weekend bought for us as gift, great welcome to the hotel, rooms were only an average three star hotel, our room needed little repair on the wallpaper coming off in a couple of places, a few cobwebs on the ceiling, food was again average for its price, drinks expensive but bar and restaurant staff were good. Spa was a little busy and staff were not attentive . My wife and I had back neck massage, very good massures

We stayed here for one night when we came to Blackburn to watch a comedy show. Very friendly reception staff who booked us a taxi and happily chatted to us. Room was clean and spacious, though considering it was an 'executive room ' it was a little worn around the edges in places. We enjoyed using the gym facilities. Breakfast was tasty and we also ate in the restaurant the night before. The portions were good, service was swift and only downfall was a rather pricey bar tariff.

We came mid-week for a family holiday and according to the staff the hotel was "quiet" that week. I think this worked in our favour.

We had a largish family room which managed to fit a king-size bed, single and a fold-out bed without us feeling overly cramped. The room and bathroom were clean, the beds were comfortable and everything worked more or less as it should. (Slight annoyance with a toilet seat that wouldn't quite stay on the rim, and a duvet that was too small for the king-size quilt that it was in but those were fairly minor niggles.) We also had to ask two different sets of noisy neighbours to be quiet on our two nights but this is hardly the hotel's fault.

We almost missed out on the breakfast because we thought it was too expensive, but we weren't told the "pre-booked" rate by the Reservations team when I tried to phone and pre-book it! Fortunately the desk clerk filled us in, and we all really enjoyed the buffet which had a good selection and was fairly quiet both mornings.

The restaurant/bar menu in the early evening seemed expensive and didn't offer anything for children, so planning to eat out is definitely worth doing. The cocktail menu is a bit of a joke given that this is a hotel chain but the wine list isn't bad and the comfy seats in the bar area are good for relaxing in.

We all enjoyed the swimming pool and thought the change rooms, showers facilities, fresh towels etc. were good. It's worth noting that the pool is almost uniformly 1.4m deep so bringing water-wings for little ones is probably a good idea if they can't swim. There are a lot of floats available but mysteriously they weren't around the second afternoon and there was no one handy to ask. The first evening we shared the pool with an aquarobics class but the pool is a fair size and there weren't many others around in our half, so this was fine.

The countryside around is beautiful and we spent half a day just driving around little country lanes enjoying the views.

Overall, we had a good stay and we'd definitely consider coming back again although I'd check to see how busy they were and would avoid wedding weekends and big conferences mid-week.

Room Tip: The rooms across the courtyard are generally quieter and it's possible to park around the back...

I had a very bad experience with the service in the hotel:

- non stop running tap discturbing the sleep....staff says it is weekend nothing can be done
- the room phone doesnot work- staff says it is weekend nothing can be done
- no wireless in the room-on mercure website all room are wireless equipped-staff says the room allotted to you is not equipped - we donot know what is written on the website, you should have called and confirmed with us before booking the room.
- quite meeting requested for internet access - Ii was given OAK room for 2 hours while there was a party going on in teh next room with doors open and loud microphone/speakers were used to sign songs and play music....QUITE ROOM.

Donot expect service in this hotel and itt was mistake for us to have boked this hotel

Good sized family room. Rambling property so distances between rooms, dining and leisure but good (if smallish) pool facility. Dinner service in bar OK though quite expensive - bar prices seem excessive though a reasonable medium sized glass of wine on offer / special at £5, so look out for 'bargains'. Good breakfast in the morning though lags behind the best Hilton, Hol Inn or Macdonald offerings. Friendly staff, ok/good service.

We stayed at the Mercure Dunkenhalgh for our friend’s wedding reception. On arrival we were impressed by the grounds and the building itself. Check in was swift and our family room was modern and large with a huge king size bed and a single bed for our daughter.

The food at the wedding breakfast was out of this world, the ice cream that came with my daughters jelly was possibly the best I’ve ever tasted. The staff were very efficient, they arranged alternative dishes for me as I’m pregnant and were quick to clear away plates and empty drinks.

Breakfast was served in a separate room for the wedding party, again the surroundings were beautiful and breakfast itself was served in a wooden panelled room which was truly unique. We didn’t use the leisure facilities as my husband had come down with flu but we would love to stay here again. The only problem we had was with the shower in room 90 as the pressure was terrible but that was my only fault with the hotel.

Would highly recommend this place to friends – stunning (and didn’t cost the earth)!
