“Great golf expeience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2013

The golf course is great, every hole different, quite a hard course and lots of trouble to get in, but most enjoyable. The hotel staff were great, very polite and helpful. The evening meal was average, chose the chefs carvery thinking it would be a help yourself, but it was not, roast potatoes overdone and too little veg and gravy. However the breakfast the next morning was wonderful. After playing on the 2nd day, we came if and tried to order a cream tea, to be told we could not have one as we had not pre-ordered, 2 ordered a prawn sandwich but there were only enough prawns for 1 meal and 4 wanted panini only to be told there were only 2 paninis left. A bad position to be in on a Monday afternoon. We had a lovely large (family size) room, but unfortunately there was a wall outside our window so no view apart from the cage of dirty linen which was stored by the wall !! However the stay was well worth the money and I would return to play and stay again

Room Tip: Ask NOT to have rooms 17 to 23 as these seem to be in the old servants quarters and have no view out...

This 3 star hotel is in dire need of updating. The rooms, whilst comfortable and clean were very old fashioned. The restaurant was OK but the meals were not of a high quality. One person was given something that he had not ordered at all. Restaurant staff could have been more professional. The reception staff were very pleasant and helpful and some of the waiting staff in the evening bars were great.

Apart from the pool and treatments, there wasn't anything to do for non-golfers. They need to have a nice sitting area where these folk can sit out and enjoy the sunshine. (If there is any)

Visited here for afternoon tea & was lovely, all for £9.95! Lovely presented sandwiches to start then stand of cream merangues, carrot caked & fresh scones with butter jam & cream. Lovely! Only slight criticism would be the size of the sandwiches, with the crusts they cut off, they where really small & only enough for 3- 4 each so was a tad hungary still. Overall beautiful place & service. :)

Just back from a 3 day golf trip, really enjoyed the time at Shawhill, the rooms are large & clean lovely hotel, some people say abit dated but this is a busy golf hotel & gets some stick from us lot so considering that I thought it was fine.
We stayed half board & have to say the food was excellent !!
Quite a tough golf course with plenty of water but in great condition, but what made the stay most enjoyable were the staff, the service we recieved was the best I've come across at any hotel I've stayed at.
Ill certainly be returning in the near future !!

I had my wedding at Shaw Hill recently.
The hotel is BEAUTIFUL, no other word for it. The grounds are amazing, and were perfect for what we wanted.
The staff are brilliant (had a few problems with 1 or 2, but no where has the perfect staff). I'd like to especially thank Guy, Matt, Lucy and all the reception staff for putting up with us, and making our wedding perfect.
The room we stayed in (room 1) was simply amazing. Possibly the nicest room I've ever stayed in. Only qualm was that the door doesn't lock automatically behind you, so that was a bit of a memory problem after all the wine :-)
The food is simply amazing. Never had better food in my life. Can't praise the catering staff enough.
A brilliant hotel and it has brilliant staff.

I stayed here for one night for a wedding. The wedding itself was lovely and well managed by the hotel. We had a meal the evening before in the hotel restaurant and the food was lovely and very attentive service.
The location is very picturesque and quiet, surrounded by the golf course.
The rooms however are not worth what the hotel charges. We paid £118 for one night which I would have expected a better quality room for.
The decor is very dated, beds hard as nails with very old bedding, carpets worn, no sound proofing (you could hear guest above walking and guest below talking!), shower was hideous - am electric power shower which dribbled at most. The only positive for the room was the view was ok and the size was bigger than expected.
My advice if you are attending a wedding is to get a taxi to the travel lodge or premier inn down the road and save you money!

We stayed at shaw hill on the 1st of june for our first wedding anniversary.

We booked a standard double room, and they actually upgraded us to a shaw hill room on arrival.

The room was quite dated but i believe that was inkeeping with the style of the hotel. The room was a spacious and the bathroom was massive. The bed was so big & comfortable and we had a great night’s sleep.

The only slight snag with the room was the bath- it had quite a large wide side and as i’m only 5ft with short legs i did struggle a bit to get back out after showering!

We booked in for afternoon tea which was a nice novelty; we did actually book the celebration tea and only received the standard afternoon tea. When they realise their mistake they did offer us the correct one but by this point it was a tad late as we were almost finished, but this wasn’t much of an issue.

We had full complimentary use of the swimming pool, sauna, steam room & Jacuzzi. All were very clean and well maintained, and there were very few people using them at the same time so it was nice and relaxed. I did ring up a few weeks in advance (as outlined on the website) to book a back massage but unfortunately there was no availability, so if you are looking to have any treatments done during your stay i’d recommend booking at least a month in advance.

We booked dinner bed and break so ate 2 meals at shaw hill and the food was spot on. For the evening meal we had 3 courses from the a la carte menu inclusive and both of our meals were delicious. The breakfast again was cooked fresh and was great.
