Owner description: See the world's only working steam powered weaving mill bring the past to life. A rare chance to re-live the days when steam ran the world!
Reviewed January 3, 2014

I've been here a few times and it never fails to fascinate. Rather than storing everything in glass cases with labels, the tools and equipment in the huge workshop are left exactly as they were - strewn over work benches and sundry surfaces so it feels as if you've dropped back in time.
Some of the staff were employed here when it was a proper working mill and they are exceptionally generous with their time - answering questions and telling stories.
The working steam locomotive is truly impressive, huge and gleaming. The engineer in charge of it will happily explain how it works.
I visited the boiler room, it was, as its name suggests, boiling hot, with heaps of coal stacked up high.
Queen St Mill is one of my favourite places to visit in this area because there is so much to learn there and because it fires up the imagination, giving a taste of how life was for people who worked in the mills.

My daughter went here with her grandparents during the school holidays, she loved every minute of it, the staff were very friendly and she had a wonderful time, while she learnt about the cotton industry.

Brilliant, especially as I spent my early working life in various cotton mills. Also I spent a couple of years as a weaver. Pity they can,t reproduce the noise of a roomful of looms rattling away. The boilers and the steam engine are an engineering masterpiece. Do not miss this.

Museum may not be the right description for Queen Street Mill. For us it still seemed to be a working cotton mill - so much of the machinery was still there and the steam engine still fires up. The staff were great - very approachable and every little detail explained. Plenty of anecdotes from the staff about how the cotton industry was and how it declined - some funny and some sad but all so interesting. Will definately go back again.
