The location and atmosphere are good enough, the service and seating arrangements are informal and just fine, but the food was a disappointment. We ordered the fish stew and a dozen oysters. When it arrived I thought it was some kind of joke - I'd been expecting a meal but what arrived was a tiny bowl of soup with a little bit of fish and a couple of mussels in and three chunks of baguette. I'd like to comment on the flavour but there was barely a mouthful to taste. The oysters were also rather small. The bowl of mussels with chips that my daughter had looked a little bit more satisfying.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon, we quickly realised some of the popular restaurants were closed for annual leave. We then found the Lobster Shack and were very pleased it was open. It is located on by the sea front so perfect for a nice view.

We had to que for around 30mins to get a table outside in the very cold weather! When you make the front of the line your seated quickly and told to order at the bar. Food service was around 15mins for main and 5mins for starter (oysters).

We were seated on table 12, what we found incredibly annoying was a large group of foreigners had decided to queue randomly right down the middle of the restaurant instead of to the side where there was plenty of space and meant they were out of the way! This meant they were queing right next to us as we were trying to eat our starter and talking very loudly beside us. Very odd and it is a shame management didn't ask them politely to queue to one side so others could enjoy their food in peace and without people standing over them!

The oysters were fresh & delicious. Price £12 for half a dozen (medium) and standard fish & chips £9.50. Catch of the day fish & chips cost around £15.00. A glass of prosecco £8. Food was good and fresh.

Personally I feel the restaurant should offer table service, just my opinion.

We ordered the half lobster with garlic and parsley, along with beerbattered cod. Both amazing. Really fresh and proper pub like feel. Only reason for a lack of star was the staff. The table service was great, but when we went to order the food, we were asked for a table number. We weren’t told we needed it, so we had to traverse a very very busy restaurant to find it. And he was very un-apathetic. He said he doesn’t know which table number it was when I described it. There must have been no more than 20 tables in the room, and I feel like it could have been handled better. Overall though amazing spot. Best fish we had in Whitstable.

Seated straight away but got there fairly early for lunch, it did fill up very quickly. Had the line caught cod and it was delicious, food arrived quickly. Views are great over the sea, dogs welcome too. Just what I needed after a long walk.

We have visited the lobster shack many times over the years and in all different seasons. Normally, you go in, find a table, then join the queue to order food, then the bar queue for drinks. The food queue can be a wait but it's worth it. The reason for the 2 start review is the lobster shack have changed their system. Now you queue out the front door and wait to be seated by a member of staff. We waited half an hour in a queue that only moved because people in front of us left. Wandering round the outside of the restaurant, we saw there were a number of tables available and so had the old system been in place, people could wander in and find a seat for themselves and maybe we wouldn't have been left standing in the cold. We left the queue after half an hour as it was not going anywhere. Hopefully this system does not remain in place as come summer time it will be too long a wait. We will visit again however, if the same system is in place, we will not be wasting our time queuing up again.
