“Still the best fish in town!”
Reviewed February 6, 2013

It is still dificult to get into this busy small restaurant but the 2 of us dropped by on a monday and managed to get in on the front counter at 3pm for a late lunch! The place was full so it had to be the counter which is a bit small. As always it is take your own wine.
The food was superb, crab cakes and smoked eel for starters, halibut and lobster for mains. My partner had a medium lobster which was too big for her so we had a doggy bag as well!
The balance of tastes and quality of cooking are amazing.
As always friendly,informal,but unobtrusive service.

“Another fantastic meal”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

4 of us went to what is rightly known in the South East (and possibly UK) as the very best in Seafood restaurants.
Another year having opened up after their usual January break with new menu plus some old favourites.
Starters - 3 mackerel salads, fresh, very tasty and excellently presented, I had scallops with fried bon bon's in a reduction of french onion soup, so very good
Mains - 1 lobster ravioli dish with a delightful fennel sauce, 1x Halibut with crab bon bon's, fresh and delicious, 2x Steak and oyster suet pudding with veg, wild mushrooms and fantastic little horseradish fritters, absolutely awesome
Sweets - 2 Pear tarte tartins with blue cheese ice cream (a speciality from the chef - pre order but so worth it) and 1 chocolate fondant sponge - best flavour choc tasted.
If you have not been to Wheelers be prepared as this accommodates on average 14 heads per sitting with 3 sittings a day (except wednesdays). The restaurant area is a small room behind the exceptional fish bar (where you can eat as well). Although the settings for the tables are cramped it adds to the overall enjoyment as you hear people enthuse about the food and usually talk to each other across the tables.
We have been going here almost every month for the last few years and the quality whether at the seafood bar or restaurant has never been better than excellent. The popularity of this restaurant and its limited covers make booking essential, do not expect to rollup and get a seat this is very much a planned booking if you are visiting the area.
Cost per head - £40, also they do not serve alcohol so bring your own.

“Small but perfectly formed”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

This seafood bar does have rather a continental feel about it, almost like tapas, except that its all the old cockles, winkles, oysters, whelks etc. Everything those down from London would like. There is a tiny restaurant which gets very booked. The food was excellent though even though it was a squeeze. If you like the unique, then this is the place for you

“One of the most unique dining experiences you'll ever have”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

There are four essential facts regarding Wheelers:
1) The place is tiny so BOOK well in advance
2) It's BYO and CASH ONLY but there's an off-licence opposite and a cash-point yards away
4) It's nothing more than a tiny seafood shop with a converted "dining room" at the back which feels like someone's rather quirky lounge. Don't expect the usual dining frills of a large restaurant

When the likes of Jay Raynor sing its praises though, you know you're on to a winner. Between us we had starters of belly pork with scallops and quail scotch egg kedgeree with smoked haddock - both of which were simply incredible. For mains we had black sea bream and lemon sole. Too full for pudding but what we saw looked pretty impressive too.

It's by no means cheap but do remember that the BYO wine comes without mark-up, so it still works out quite affordable. Can't recommend this place enough

“Excellent food really worth a visit but booking essential”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

Had a really great meal during the oyster festival last year, food was really exceptional but booking well in advance is essential as there are only 4 tables and 14covers if my memory serves me well.
I booked 6 weeks in advance to get the date that I wanted and was not disappointed.
Bring your own bottle, good off licence across the road, cash only payment as no debit / credit cards accepted,ATM within 100 yards so no worries there. Will definitely return again.
