Had a nice stay at the Continental Hotel, good breakfast and good location - tucked away but right on the beach and only 10 minutes walk from the main centre.

Very interesting building and I loved the décor throughout, stripped wooden floors, seaside style painted in white/grey/stone very of the moment. 10 out of 10 for being spotlessly clean throughout. It was lovely to sit in the friendly bar with a drink and watch it get dark outside.

Being an old building the rooms appear to vary greatly in size. Our room was on the side and was not noisy with a quite a nice view over trees and a next door garden. It was decorated in keeping with the rest of the hotel with a nice bathroom which had natural light, which is a plus in a hotel bathroom but the only thing I would say is that it was very small and we felt it should not have been sold as a double room - it had a small double bed which was a squash and only one bedside cabinet, it would have been perfect for a single traveller. It was fine as we only needed it to sleep in for one night but to be honest I would have struggled with the lack of space for more than one night and would probably not been as happy. However, I got it at a good price and this is Whitstable - it is not cheap you are paying for the location and this did not detract from a nice stay. I would just say that if you can afford the extra for a terrace and or seaview room then go for it because even if you got a small room you would feel it was more worth it and particularly in the summer you could open the doors and increase the space.

Other nice touches here are the later breakfast time at the weekends and the parking - as the permit doesn't expire until 1pm you can explore the town in the morning.

Room tip: terrace rooms are at the front

We arrived too early to book in, at 10.15am, and asked at the bar if it was possible for us to have a breakfast. We were told breakfast was finished and we couldn't sit in the dining area as we hadn't booked in to our room yet, so we ordered coffee and sat in the bar area.
At 10.30am a couple, plus one, arrived on their bikes and asked if they could have breakfast. They were told, I'll just go and ask. Then seconds later were invited into the dining area to help themselves to what was on the breakfast buffet bar.
Is there a them and us situation?
However, despite that, we did have a good stay at the hotel with our family (10 guests in total) and the lady at reception was very nice and helpful. We have stayed several times, before and after hotel revamp. The rooms are nice and clean though some are rather cramped. Showers could do with shelving to put shampoo etc on whilst in use, could also do with drawer space and shelving in main room area, certainly in the room we had this time. We will stay again.

Room tip: Book well in advance for sea view rooms

We stayed 1 night, room was well equipped, modern and just about big enough (but it did have a large deck) could not get the TV working properly though. Shower was powerful and hot. Bar and restaurant was lovely and spacious with high ceilings, breakfast was excellent. We got a parking space round the back but I get the impression that you may not always be lucky. The staff were very friendly but our friends who also stayed were not quite so happy due to them being wrongfully accused of causing a fraccas the night before and our other friends were told they could not park at the hotel as they arrived before check-in (even though parking was available). They were okay with us though.

Stayed two nights for a short winter break. Hotel right next to the Tankerton Slopes which link up with the promenade that can be walked as far as Herne Bay. There are not many hotels in Whitstable, so you probably need to book early if you want to stay here. There is a 10 minute walk to the edge of the main part of Whitstable. The more expensive rooms have a view of the Thames Estuary. Breakfast was included in the price of the room, which was in my view not cheap. The staff were very friendly. We enjoyed our stay. We had a deluxe room with a seaview. Only negative would be the balcony. Although out of season we assumed it would have a couple of chairs and a table so we could enjoy a cup of tea and a gaze at the water. Sadly two deckchairs were not suitable for that so I might just have well booked a room without a balcony and saved myself a fair bit of cash. My days of sitting in a deckchair without re-igniting my bad back are long gone. Two plastic garden chairs would be ideal replacements.

Room tip: Check you are getting the best price.
