We revisited the Duke last weekend and were delighted by the welcoming warmth the new owners have introduced.

Having taken over the Duke in September 2011 by adding small touches and friendly faces the Management have wiped out what was turn into a brawling pub (with bouncers on the door) and brought in a new and much needed return to a large B&B style inn with what my husband described as the best Vegetarian breakfast this side of the green fields (at Glastonbury). High praise indeed from a man who is someone who works in hospitality.

Unfortunately the noise from the live entertainment in the bar below the rooms is still the same (perhaps some Bostic sound deadening panels in the ceiling of the bar might help?) and although the waitress in the new barn restaurant gave an excellent recital of the menu selection we think perhaps a menu board (which list times and prices) outside of the restaurant is a must...and we think is a legal requirement?

Thank you for a warm and inviting stay in our favourite uk holiday location.

Room Tip: As high up as possible due to noise from the bar if you want to go to sleep before 12 (although they...

We had a brilliant stay here. The owner and staff were exceptionally friendly and could not have been more helpful! Room was clean and fresh and the bed was very comfy. Nice biscuits and tea facilities in the room. The pub downstairs had regulars bands on which we enjoyed. (Little noisy if you want peace & quiet - can't beat em - join em - is my philosophy!! Or take earplugs - always a must for travelling!)
Fry up breakfast was great - one of the best I've had!!
Very handy for the sea front & harbour. Lovely place to visit.

We stayed the night at The Cumberland Hotel on a lovely sunny weekend. It's bang in the middle of the wonderful Whistable town centre with loads of super small shops and restaurants. It's an eccentric, mad place but what fun! A really different hotel/pub with bright young staff, and popular with the locals who are also a funny bunch! The room was nothing special, but clean and warm. The Big Breakfast was great - all locally sourced and organic, with home made bread. It's not Travel Lodge - live a little - stay here.

The Duke of Cumberland has recently been taken over by new management and we were a bit wary due to previous reviews on Tripadvisor.

We had a lovely stay. Everyone was really friendly and helpful from the minute we arrived 4 hours early and left our bags in the room to the Sunday morning when we were told we could have breakfast and check out when we wanted too as no-one was using the room that night.

We had a small double (number 8). It was actually pretty spacious and plainly decorated, with a comfy double bed, tall chest of drawers, table and chair etc. So not as small as we'd been expecting. There's no wardrobe just hooks on the wall but that was enough for our one night stay.

The bathroom was clean and bright with a shower, plenty of towels and free mini toiletries.
The whole room slopes in that very old building sort of way and was really charming.

Breakfast was a lovely full english spread with amazing bacon and wild mushrooms and home made bread which set us up for the day!

I'd definitely recommend for the price. It's not a luxury B&B just a good honest, clean and tidy one and we were very impressed. There's not many options in Whistable that are so centrally located, one minute to the beach, Native Oyster Company and Wheelers. It's also a pub and in a really nice building!!

We have just returned from staying one night at the Duke ofCumberland,we were really impressed with the room and the staff. This is a B&B where you just fit in with the hussle and bussle of the pub. The room was clean, well decorated and perfect for one or two nights away. If you are after peace and quiet then this is not the place for you, but if you like something fun and with a great atmosphere then try this out.
The breakfast was awazing, roasted tomatoes, wild mushrooms and a bacon and sausage that are out of this world.
We loved Whitstable and as it is close to London perfect for a quick night away and this B&B is great.

We are already planning our next weekend back here, the Duke of Cumberland will now have some regular guests.

The Duke of Cumberland is a centrally located pub in the heart of Whitstable. I stayed there on Boxing day night with my husband, having booked in for bed and breakfast. We arrived the afternoon before and checked in. The lobby leading to the staircase was shabby, bordering on dirty, but the bedroom was fine. We were specifically asked what time we required breakfast the following morning, which was lovely because we wanted to get away sharply. We requested 8.30am.
We got back to the pub later that evening and realised as we went through the lobby that we couldn't find the light switch, so we ascended the stairs in complete darkness. A health and safety issue there!
In the morning we went down for breakfast at the requested time. A couple of red setters were galloping around, and we were hoping they would be gone by breakfast time. The pub was freezing cold but a large roaring fire had been laid which was a nice touch. We requested a full English breakfast. Ten minutes the lady came back and said "frustratingly, I have no bacon, is that allright?" We of course said "yes, that's ok" even though we were a bit put out. After all, they knew we were coming. Our breakfast eventually arrived at 9 oclock!! When my husband complained at the wait, she said that it had taken her 20 minutes to cook the sausages!! The breakfast was lovely and contained two eggs, obviously to make up for the lack of bacon, but it had taken half an hour.
We were hoping for a bit a goodwill gesture when it came to paying the bill, which was £90 for the two of us. Surely a customer's complaint should be taken seriously. However, the lady just apologised again saying that the sausages had taken her 20 minutes to cook!
Until this pub is fully equiped for bed and breakfast customers, I would avoid it.
