“Right by the harbour”
Reviewed September 2, 2013 via mobile

After travelling down from Manchester on a hot day we were looking to find somewhere to eat outside when we came across this restaurant. It was a little on the pricey side but my fish and chips were lovely. My partner had the Ploughman's and it was the largest portion I have ever seen so well worth the money. The restaurant was very busy and there seemed to be a lot of table rearranging but the service was reasonable. All in all I would recommend this restaurant

“London Community Gospel Choir 31st August”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

We went to see the choir at Whitstable on Saturday. This venue provides great musical entertainment and Saturday was no exception. The choir were simply fantastic...such a great atmosphere and wonderful entertainment. Congratulations are in order to the management fro bringing this splendid act to the venue. However.....they were the best part of the evening as the catering service and meal regrettably weren't! The tickets had been paid for on the basis of the entertainment and a fixed menu. On arrival 'due to operational changes' according to the note on the table, an a la carte menu was instead available and any cost difference would be added or refunded at the end of the evening. This should not have been a problem but.....were the operational changes may have been as a result of several empty tables?
As we had been advised of aour booking confirmation by email and as we have been reminded by the owner by email to report on Trip Advisor to post comments then surely we could have been told about the booking change by email??
The service was slow, the service was indifferent, the starters took some while to arrive, mine - grilled goat's cheese salad, was cold, one main course of chicken with a cream sauce and broccoli ( apparently a seasonal vegetable - in August?) was overcooked and tough, I found it somewhet tricky to eat moules in the dark! - and we were not offered the service for a dessert. How this was possible with several empty tables suggested a lack of catering organisation. It seemed though that if you were known to the management and the staff you were greeted and paid attention to, but this honour didn't seem to apply to everyone.
We have been before and I congratulate the choir on redeeming what would otherwise possibly have been a disappointment. I may think carefully before eating there again. And it is such a pity as this is an excellent venue. It wll be interesting to hear comments from the management, and from others attending

“We gave up”
Reviewed September 1, 2013 via mobile

A beautiful sunny Tuesday lunchtime, live jazz and one table left in the shade, this place looked like a great little find. Service was very slow, but we weren't in any great rush so the wait to order and to receive drinks was ok. After about 35 minutes waiting for our food and failing to be able to get the attention of any waiting staff, I tracked down our waitress and asked how our food was coming along. She nervously glanced at our table and said she'd check, and returned to say it would just be five minutes. Another 15 minutes later, we gave up. As we went to the cash desk to pay for our drinks, she then told us that another waitress had our food, but when she pointed her out, she was heading to a different table. We suggested that she had only just ordered our food when we had chased it up, and at this point she asked what we had ordered (lobster salad and a small bowl of mussels) and we were told it was just how long the mussels took. A little insulting to be told we should have expected to wait 55 minutes for our meals, not an apology in sight. We pointed out there were people who arrived after us but had mussels before we had even chased up our food, in response we got a grunt and an insistence that our food was just coming. Sorry guys, far too late and too much fobbing us off. We went to The Forge instead - no jazz but charming service, deck chairs and cracking fish n chips!

“Delightful cafe overlooking Whitstable harbour”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

My wife and I had lunch at the Harbour Garden Café and it was delicious. The oysters at £19 per dozen were more expensive than at some of the restaurants on the front but the location and quality of service just about justified the premium price. Fish of the day was skate wings in a prawn and leek sauce which was very tasty. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to other visitors to Whitstable.

“Birthday Treat”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

Took my sister to the Harbour Cafe for a birthday meal, it was a beautiful day and they had a Jazz band playing.so the setting was lovely. The service was a little slow as they were very busy but it was not a problem as we wanted to take our time and listen to the band. I had the Lobster and my sister had the Dressed Crab and both were delicious. The Lobster was a bit expensive compared to the prices some other places are offering but I've not tried them so can't really compare. I have been to the Harbour Cafe before as I live in the area and will definitely be returning. In a nutshell a really nice setting, friendly staff, entertainment and good food..........what more could you want.
