I stayed here for three nights with my partner and two business colleagues whilst attending the Kent County Agricultural show in July 2013. We stayed in one of three converted barn rooms, next to the main building, whilst our colleagues stayed in one of the outdoor challets which overlook the garden.
On the up side, Tonge Barn is set in beautiful surroundings with lots of trees, Wisteria, pebbled courtyards, lawned areas and outside benches, tables and chairs, ideal for when the weather is fine. We ordered takeaway meals in the evenings and dined al fresco during the good weather. The sounds of the birds and occasional hedgehog sightings also added to the charm.
On the down side, in our the converted barn, the bathroom consisted of a wet room which did not drain very well resulting in consistently wet feet or shoes. The bathroom hadn't seen a duster for a long time with thick dust on the cross bars of the door. The shower was, at best, tepid and the toilet did not flush very well. The bedroom was large and airy with a beamed ceiling, a double bed, a small adjacent room with a curtained off single bed, TV, wardrobe, drawers, table and mini fridge. The bed and pillows, however, were not very comfortable and the noise from the regular trains on the nearby railway was a little off-putting. We could also easily hear converastions in the next room as the walls were very thin. Our colleagues' challet had similar problems, the worst being the fact that there were streamers instead of a door between the bedroom and the bathroom resulting in us having to leave the room every time one of us needed to use the loo!
Steve, the owner, popped across occasionally for a chat and was kind enough to supply us with take-away menues and dishes to eat our take away evening meals on .....after we went to ask for them. He seemed like a nice enough guy but so laid back that he gave us all the impression, rightly or wrongly, that the business was his meal ticket rather than his passion. Service information, on arrival, was limited and the rest of the available services had to be teased out by us.
Tonge Barn has so much going for it but I feel that the attention to detail needs to be notched up a gear or too to avoid, as was my experience, innitial high expectations quickly resulting in disappointment.
