“Old school charm with a modern twist.”
Reviewed August 19, 2014

An historic hotel in a beautiful, quaint town; the rooms were large and the beds were lovely. The restaurant and bar are in the modern part of the hotel, and the food, service and atmosphere were all great. As you may expect with a medieval town, parking at the hotel is very limited, but the main town car park is a 50 yard walk, and the hotel give you a ticket to cover the costs.
Very enjoyable stay.

Stayed recently on a golfing trip. Ideal location , though parking can be difficult , seems to be the norm for Sandwich . Excellent restaurant , good choice of reasonable wines . Superb lamb dish , starters ok but not if you are starving .
Very nice modern bar , good selection of beers and wine by the glass , worth a visit .
Rooms are good size and beds are fine. A warning to the squeamish , you may find a collection of dead flies and moths if you pull down the blinds .
All in all it has it's charm and is fair value.

Room Tip: doesn't seem to make much difference , some of us stayed front , and some back .

We only stayed for one night, but the room although small was clean and well stocked with tea, coffee and toiletries. We ate in the restaurant and the food was excellent. Only downside - the colour of the shirts the staff wear is horrible!

We stayed at the Bell Hotel for our wedding anniversary and found the location online as we were interested in exploring the east coast. The hotel is in an excellent location on the quay in Sandwich. We booked the Riverside View suite, I believe the 2nd most expensive room in the large, redecorated hotel. The room was large, spacious and full of light. Decor was tasteful and the room contained all expected amenities, even a digital radio which was an unexpected treat. The large windows looked onto the River Stour, and the atmosphere in and around the hotel was lively. Especially nice is a large patio area along one side of the hotel, which is great for drinks, nibbles and people-watching. Upon check-in, we ordered a newspaper (£1) to be delivered the following morning - which never came (the hotel staff admitted it was never ordered). Another small bug-bear is the parking, which is very limited. The hotel has 4 car spaces for dozens of rooms. Even though there is a car park about 5 minutes away on the quay, and the hotel does give you a voucher for overnight parking (£1), it seems to me that staying in one of their most expensive rooms should warrant a bit of extra special treatment. The newspaper should be complimentary, and they should reserve one of the parking spaces if you're spending £171 for a night's stay. Breakfast the following morning could have been better organised. Despite a fair number of staff, it still took a while to be seated and to order. Much better to seat guests swiftly and immediately get them a coffee/tea so that if it takes a little while to order you're already seated with a nice drink to pass the time. Although we ordered a cooked breakfast (eggs benedict on a bagel was great), the buffet looked quite depleted by the time we arrived. Keeping the buffet stocked means even the last guests in the door feel they're getting a valuable experience. The staff were all very nice and, as I say, the trip in general was great. But, when looking for value for money, this hotel could go the extra mile to make the stay more thoroughly enjoyable, and turn our 'very good' rating into an 'excellent.'

Was very pleasantly surprised with this hotel. It has been refurbished up to modern standards but has not lost any charm & original feel. The staff were all very friendly & helpful. We ate in the restaurant for dinner & the food was sublime. Breakfast in the morning was a feast to satisfy the hungriest of people-my partner was in his element with such a variety to choose from. The rooms beautifully furnished, clean & comfortable. Everything needed was there. Thankyou very much. We will definitely be back again.

A very comfortable hotel. Good bathroom, excellent towels. Meals good and reasonably priced. You have the option of restaurant or bar menus. Staff very friendly and helpful, welcome visitors. Some noise from outside, not from the hotel but one pub opposite. Also from a "Greek Night" in a neighbouring restaurant. The second time we have stayed at the "Bell", and we look forward to returning.

Sandwich is a lovely quiet town so we were a bit surprised to not get the best sleep either night we stayed. We were in room 44 on the far side of the hotel from the river, and had the windows open in the warm weather. This meant the nearby church clock chiming twice hourly through the night was hard to sleep through! In addition, the glass collection early both mornings was really noisy.

Judging by other reviews, the noise level is not an issue in other parts of the building so perhaps a careful room choice would solve the problem!

Despite this rather fundamental problem, and some patchy service in the restaurant, everything else was great! Lovely setting, comfortable room & beds and a great breakfast.

Choose a quieter room & I think you will find this a great place to take a break.
