booked to stay here for two nights this weekend both couples had booked king size rooms!ours was room no 19 which was a decent size ,our friends was room no38 their room not quite as a big!
Check in was easy let us check in a bit earlier, very helpful staff!
Rooms were fine but tired definantly need to look at improving the housekeeping as a lot of dust etc in rooms on lamps, lights and the dried flowers which were covered in dust!such a shame as could be so nice!!Also the hotel is lovely from the outside and into lobby area then when u are shown to your rooms upstairs the carpets which I presume should be cream are so so grubby!it wouldn't take a lot to deep clean them which would make such a better first impression!
The rooms were very stiflingly hot even with main windows wide open and bathroom windows wide open I dread to think what would have been like in reaaly hot weather!
Although the hotel were really good the second night as I said it was so hot and was going to buy a fan they brought me up one straight away!
You cannot fault any one that works in this hotel all friendly.happy, knowledgeable etc one really big plus for us!
The breakfast in the morn again lovely plenty of choice with it pastries, continental meats, cereals, full English, kippers etc etc!
Parking can be a bit of a nightmare as only five spaces here I was lucky to get one for the weekend but otherwise u have to pay to put in public car park would make sense really like other hotels for them to maybe have a subsidised permit for car par park per 24 hours when staying at hotel!!
All in all we would def come back but would also hope that someone takes notice and ups the keep of the hotel just by keeping rooms a bit cleaner, cleaning carpets etc and maybe a paint job here and there to keep it always looking clean and fresh for guests!

Nice hotel, big room to accommodate 3 in a family room. Apart from breakfast room, hotel could do with a lick of paint and update. Not glamorous but fine for what we were looking for. Staff very friendly and helpful. The chef even went to the shops for us to buy veggie sausages for our breakfast !

We stayed in one of the river view rooms with a balcony. Really comfy bed ,lovely shower and bathroom. Breakfast was very good on the first two days, fresh hot toast, good choice and excellent quality, right down to the vegetarian sausage. However on our last day I think we got the Nouvelle Cuisine Breakfast chef - 8 baked beans does not a portion make !!

I normally look for more economical hostelries for our breaks but The Bell was offering a DB&B special that was very tempting. So I booked it and how wonderful it was. Yes the interior is a bit tired (it is an old building and must be hugely expensive to maintain) but that is more than made up for by the character of the place and a substantial refurb is planned imminently. The food was very good as was the cleanliness of the hotel. However, the friendliness, politeness and helpfulness of ALL the staff was quite exceptional. What really pleased me was that no corners were cut because we were on a deal. So often with deals I have been put on a cheapie menu or in the smallest worst located room and generally made to feel the poor relation; not so with the Bell. I shall be keeping my eyes peeled for future offers. The jazz night beckons............

The hotel is certainly not to the standard of the price. The rooms are tired as is the reception area but the staff are pretty friendly. No air conditioning, so the rooms are also hot.
The restaurant was a mixture of good and bad as was the food. The mange tout was presented as stewed slop but the sea bass was quite good if under seasoned. The soup, Stilton and Broccoli, lacked Stilton and seasoning, so was pretty bland.
In all, I would have expected much more for the price and would look elsewhere in future.

Firstly, I have to make it clear that we had one of the 'cheaper' double rooms and so our experience may not apply to all rooms. It was also a very busy time for the hotel, as they were fully booked.
The room was quite small, there was no space for a wardrobe and a section of the room had been partitioned off to accommodate the bathroom and part of the adjoining room. This is quite normal in old buildings but what was not usual, was the degree of noise that could be heard from the adjoining room. It was obviously just a simple stud wall. You should not have to put up with your neighbours TALKING in the early hours! Add to this the heat (it was during a particularly warm spell) and the church clock chimes, it did make for a couple of restless nights. Having said that, the bed was very comfortable, the bed linen was wonderful and the window dressings excellent (black out blinds & heavy curtains). There was ample natural light from the two tall windows, though these did seem to attract a lot of flies (we had been wondering why there was fly/insect killer in the hair-drier draw)! Not to mention the odd woodlouse.
The fixtures and fittings were of good quality but the room gave the impression that it was past it's best and could do with a little spruce up-carpet stained & would benefit from a wash, bit of a damp or condensation problem on a couple of the walls hence could do with rubbing down & a lick of paint, bath plug hole needed unblocking, functioning of taps not quite as initially expected. None of the aforementioned were terrible but it could annoy some people. It is worth noting that the quality of the towels and the toiletries could not be faulted (though the bottles were not replenished for the second day).
We were right at the top of the building, which required negotiation of series of narrow, relatively steep steps, which are not really suitable for the mobility challenged, those carrying particularly heavy cases or those with young children. It was not a problem for us but it is something to be aware of.
The quality of the breakfast could not be faulted. There is a wide selection and the cooked breakfast is made to order.
Parking in front of the hotel is limited, though there is a pay & display car park to the rear. (Free parking can be found but you have to go a little further-ask reception staff, if this is required, as there are time restrictions on many of the streets.)

Had a great night and the room was divine! We had a balcony and it was lovely to have the doors open in our room where the sun was shining. The breakfast was great and the staff very nice and polite. Highly recommended and definitely stay there again, many thanks
