The Salutation Gardens
Ranked #2 of 22 things to do in Sandwich

striking range of different areas in garden ;the vegetable patch was not up to scatchh ;all other areas well maintained
impressive garden
i suppose if you bought a season ticket and then got half price season ticket into Brogdale[or vice versa] that might be one way of reducing price;certainly useful to see 3 times a year
car parking on side streets a little tricky[sat navs dont work in sandwich one way streets!];and so you can easily miss the municipal car park right beside garden
lots of interesting churches and houses to see 5 minutes away in charming well preserved town

The gardens have recovered from the dreadful floods and are better than ever. The tea rooms have re-opened and provide elegant teas and also hot food and good luncheon snacks

We found the gardens tranquil and pleasant and really enjoyed walking around. As one would expect from the combination of Lutyens and Jekyll there is a magic to this place and we look forward to visiting again another time. However, we then stopped for lunch at the attached Salutation Tea Room. It was terrible (see separate review). The gentle atmosphere was ruined by the behaviour of someone who we think was the manager. Poor value, slow service on top of the behaviour was too much and ruined our day out. Next time we visit the gardens we will take our refreshments elsewhere. Pity - the place has such potential.

Lovely gardens in ideal setting but entrance fee is is a little pricey. Lovely, unusual gifts in the gift shop

I have visited these gardens originally designed by Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll, their only collaboration I believe. The garden is always worth a visit although not cheap to enter. It changes with the seasons so one would need to go several times a year. When it was first opened there were many horticultural students working there but lately I have not seen any gardeners at the time when I visited. I heard that the house and garden might be up for sale and the new owners might not keep the gardens open to the public. It must have been a very costly restoration and maybe the investment did not give sufficient returns.
