“Do yourself a favour - just book it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013

Stayed here with my hubby for (sadly) just one night in early October. We opted for a "superior sea view" room. The room wasn't very large - but it was immaculate, stylish and very comfortable. Only small niggle was that there was no source for music i.e. docking station or other - something that I expect from a five star boutique hotel these days. There were built in ceiling speakers - but we couldn't figure out what they were for (not the t.v.)... but just a minor niggle.

We spent the afternoon at the bar on the end of the harbour (Lighthouse Bar?) and we heard the most fab Country duo called Starlane - honestly these guys were amazing. You have to try to catch them soon. We couldn't believe we were sitting outside, in the gorgeous sunshine, listening to the best music we've heard in ages. What more could we want?

As it happens, the only answer was champagne! Well it so reasonably priced - it was rude not to! So we made full use of the private balcony and very comfortable seating. The sunset was simply to die for.

We headed down to dinner and was a little sad to see the restaurant was empty (it was only 7.30pm), we really hope that the local community support this business - they are leading the way for a new market coming to Margate.

Our dinner was fab - no complaints at all about the food. The service was ok, but really lacks some maturity. The girls were lovely, but perhaps a little unprofessional (not their fault - they need some supervision) - for example the choice of background music was really not appropriate for the setting - seemed to be more for the waiting staff than the customers. Again just a small gripe - am sure it improves when they are busier.

Breakfast was brilliant - everything was top notch.

Margate deserves sucess - we will certainly be back and will definitely be booking this hotel.

So if liek me you were hesitating to book a stay in Margate...... just do it and make sure you stay at this hotel - you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Room Tip: Go for the sea view - superioir if you can stretch to it - the balcony is a great addition.

Superb, rooms right up there with five star hotels. Stayed for only one night however would certainly return. Breakfast overlooking Margate bay superb. Attention to detail unmatched. Should be Number one hotel in Margate.

Great brand new hotel. Went there on a fab hot july weekend and had a room overlooking the beach - it was great. This is a stylish place with good food right next to the old town with its quirky shops. We really enjoyed it. The staff seemed a little under trained, tho I expect this has been sorted now

This was our second stay.
It was really excellent in all respects
The rooms are very nice indeed.

The restaurant is very good and service on the balcony is a delight.
It is also helpful that easy parking is available close to the hotel.

WE will certainly be going again.

We stayed for two nights at the Sands on the 3rd and 4th September 2013.
It is a fine hotel overlooking Margate's wide sandy bay. We were blessed with bright, warm sunshine that improves any experience but this hotel is outstanding. It benefits from having been open only for about three months and so everything is new and shiny. The building restoration has been carried out with thoughtfulness and care. The public areas are bright and airy and the bedrooms glitzy but still with a comfortable feel. We had Room 01 which has an open balcony overlooking the sea, watching the beautiful sunsets across the bay with a glass of champage and a complimentary bag of crisps was magical! The double glazing is very efficient and the room is quiet when the balcony doors are closed. We had not expected to need cooling in September but the air conditioning was invaluable on these warm days. There are two similar rooms, 02 and 03, there are balcony rooms on a higher floor but these have brick surrounds to the balcony giving a more restricted outlook when seated.
There is a restful roof top terrace providing wide vistas of the bay.
Meals could be eaten outside overlooking the sea or inside where the sea view is still impressive. Breakfast was a gentle and pleasurable start to the day and Dinner was outstanding, the food was cooked to a very high standard with excellent tastes and textures, the desserts were sublime served in very satisfying quantities.
The reception staff were very welcoming and the restaurant staff respectfully friendly and efficient. We had one waitress who perhaps needs a little more training, she was pleasant but not quite on top of her role, remembering the order and delivering it were not her greatest attributes. This was a small hiccup quickly sorted out in what was otherwise a very happy and enjoyable stay.
The address of the hotel is given as Marine drive and it can be accessed from here using an intercom to the reception desk upstairs. The 'main' entrance with easy access is in High Street but parking outside to unload is a little tricky here. The hotel has a few reserved parking spaces in a car park behind High Street, they provide, for a small charge, a notice to be displayed in your vehicle that gives 24 hour parking.
We will return......

Room Tip: As mentioned in the review, rooms 01, 02, and 03 are the best balcony rooms, the higher balcaony roo...

Any new business that has the guts and imagination to invest in Margate is worthy of huge praise. To say The Sands is a welcome addition to the town is to monumentally understate the case, providing as it does, a level of care and attention to detail that is, to be brutally honest, all but anachronistic in the town. What Margate needs is confidence, to believe in itself again, to grow and develop and challenge the idea that all seaside towns in the UK are in decline. The Sands is part of that process and I really admire the vision of the owners to bring the building back to life and give visitors the opportunity to enjoy that extraordinary view from the terrace as the sun goes down and to help turn the town from a days destination to a weekend trip.
Yes, I had minor - very minor - reservations about the slightly too 'Footballers Wives' for my taste decor and the levels of the music in the restaurant, but as I was enjoying a glass of wine, served by some of the nicest staff in Kent, looking across the bay at that amazing sunset, thinking about how inspired Turner was to paint it and how blessed we are in Thanet to have all this new energy and excitement popping up everywhere, I was more than happy to let go of my cynicism and enjoy...

Room Tip: Seaside Rooms are beyond compare
