Owner description: The Shell Grotto is one of the world’s most mysterious places: a series of underground rooms and passageways covered by 2000sqft of exquisite mosaic created with 4.6 million shells. Discovered in 1835, nobody knows who created it, when, or why. “The grotto is simultaneously haunting and homely. It could be a lost pagan shrine or have ‘A Present From Margate’ picked out in the shells - it wouldn’t matter. It’s still magical, mysterious and (once it’s in your head) impossible to forget.” Far From the Sodding Crowd: More Uncommonly British Days Out, Penguin Books, 2007

Very interesting little excursion with a twist - was it a Roman temple, a priest hole, a lifelong hobby - who knows but worth a look.

A treasure made underneath a town garden in Victorian times. It is quite fascinating however you have to go down steps so access limited. Concessions £3, small cafe which we did not sample. We had an A4 sheet to guide us through the tunnel.
Worth a visit if you are in Margate

My title sums it up. A bizarrely brilliant place to go - only a short visit - maybe half hour or so but so odd it warrants the trip.

Amazing creation! I went here the first time over 40 years ago and was stunned then too. My return visit last week, with my papillon dog, surpassed my expectations. The staff are exceedingly friendly and allow small dogs if carried.
The gift shop has an interesting selection of items from shells to seagulls, and the best value crystals I have ever found.

Unique Shell Grotto built by unknown hands very near the old part of Margate. Well worth the visit for the weird and wonderful atmosphere of the place. Nice Architectural salvage place round the corner as well as the History of Margate Museum and some great places to eat in the old Town..
